Restored and improved image
The first Ferris Wheel, Chicago Illinois, 1894

There were many photos taken of this mammoth structure, but few up close like this. It was built for the World's Columbian Exposition to rival the Eiffel Tower. Construction began in 1892. It stood 264 feet tall and took 20 minutes for the 36 luxury cars to make one revolution. We will include a few other views of the same Ferris wheel (small lower-resolution photos) with your print at no additional cost if you request them when you pay. Please see our other photos of Chicago. Scroll down to see your savings on additional purchases. Check out our other items!

You will receive a not-cropped 5-inch by 7-inch (5x7) sepia-tone luster-finish print that will ship the next business day after you pay, unless you request substitutions in eBay on the same day that you pay. The substitutions that are available are described below. For example, you can request to substitute an 8x10 or images on a CD at no additional charge. 11x14 and larger-size prints are also available for an additional charge (see below).

This improved print has been or will be custom-made for you new, in a photo lab. We have taken great care to preserve the sharpness and old look while removing scratches, spots, and other damage that would make it less viewable. We have repaired imperfections and improved tonal values. The optional grayscale image is shown in the first picture. This image is not the same proportions as today’s standard display devices. So, your print will have white margins above and below the image as shown in the second picture. It can be matted for framing.

Why buy this photo:  This improved print would be a good conversation starter in a restaurant, waiting room, lobby, classroom, office, library, or museum in Chicago. Decorators use our sepia-tone prints in a variety of ways to make them look old (see "Tone options" below). This photo could also be a gift for a history buff, Ferris Wheel enthusiast, or Chicago buff. It can be resold in a store (see "Wholesale lots" below). Our photos can be used in school reports, presentations, and displays. This is a significantly improved version of this image and it must be licensed for use in a publication, production, or other product (see "Licenses" below).

Custom processing:  If you request substitutions, we will custom make your item after we receive your payment, usually within 48 hours. This means that you can choose an alternative crop, size, tone, finish, or CD (see below). We ship custom-made prints and CDs quickly, usually within 2 or 3 days. If you do not request substitutions, we ship your 5x7 print the next business day after we receive your payment. So, you must specify substitutions on the same day that you pay.

Size options:  This image is not the same proportions as today’s standard display devices. So, prints in some sizes will have white margins above and below the image so that we don't have to crop out any of the image. The bid and/or Buy It Now prices shown are for one standard 5-inch by 7-inch (5x7) print. However, you can substitute the optional 8x10 or a CD (see "CD option" below) at no additional charge. Be sure to make your request when you pay. Or, to substitute an even larger size, you can ask us to add the cost to your eBay invoice before you pay. If you have already paid, you must request the larger size in eBay messages on the same day that you paid. We will tell you how to pay the additional amount. You may be asked to purchase an add-on eBay item (upsize) that covers the additional cost. You must pay for the upsize item on the same day that you paid for this photo, so that we can make your large print on the next business day and ship it promptly.

Crop options:  This image is not the same proportions as standard 11x14 prints. It will not be cropped unless you request "crop to fit" on the same day that you pay. Not cropped means the entire image will be visible but there will be white margins wider than 1/4 inch above and below the image. These white margins will be visible when the print is displayed in standard devices unless you mat it. Crop to fit means the image will be enlarged more so that it fits top-to-bottom but some of the left side of the image will no longer be visible.

Not cropped (Entire image visible. White margins at top and bottom.):  Default

Crop to fit (No white margins. Some of the left side of the image will be cropped out.):  Request when you pay

Tone options:  Your print will have an albumen and sepia tone as shown unless you request grayscale. Albumen is the type of prints made when this photo was first printed. Sepia is the color of old prints today, caused by acid in the old paper. Many people prefer the warm sepia tones over cold black and white. Your sepia print will be on acid-free paper, but it will look old. Grayscale is the way modern black and white prints are made.

Albumen/sepia (old look):  Default tone

Grayscale (black and white):  Request when you pay

Finish options:  Your print will have a luster finish unless you request glossy when you pay. Glossy reflects glare but appears to be a bit sharper. Glossy also shows fingerprints more.

Luster (dull, less glare):  Default finish
16x20 and larger have a satin finish which is similar to luster.

Glossy (shiny, more glare, looks sharper):  Request when you pay
Not available in 16x20 nor larger sizes.

Border:  This image is not the same proportions as today’s standard display devices. If you do not request "crop to fit," your print will have white margins at the top and bottom so that we do not have to crop out any of the image. The sides that do not have margins may have white edges (less than 1/4 inch wide) outside the image so that you can display the maximum amount of the image in typical devices that hide the edges of the print.

Quality:  We select the highest-quality images we can find and carefully restore and improve them. Old photos do not meet today’s high standards due to the limitations of the materials and methods available in those days, and due to aging and damage. But we improve them as much as we can while preserving an old look. Then we process them using modern archival methods so they can be affordable and last for many years.

CD option:  You can request to substitute a CD instead of a print. The CD will contain more than one version of the image, including at least one cropped close-up, that are optimized for digital presentations, websites, and e-mail. The images will not exceed 1200 pixels in the longest dimension, and thus may not fill the screen when used for high definition displays. If we have additional information about the image, we will include a text file as well. You must request the CD in eBay on the same day that you pay. The CD and images shall not be printed nor reproduced for sale nor distribution.

Packaging:  We ship 5x7 and 8x10 prints and CDs flat with a stiff board to prevent folding, in a sturdy envelope. Larger sizes are carefully rolled and shipped in a sturdy mailing tube.

Shipping cost:  This item is sold with packaging materials and handling included in the price. Domestic postage is also included. For destinations outside the U.S.A., buyer pays actual postage.

Savings on additional purchases:  Shipping and handling costs less per item when you buy more items that can ship together in the same package. We pass this savings on to buyers. Some items can not be shipped together and thus may not result in much savings. For example, small flat items such as cards, CDs and DVDs cannot ship with rolled prints. Here is how you will save:

Additional items showing "Free shipping" (to US addresses only):
$1.00 rebate per additional qualifying item.

Additional items showing shipping costs:
You pay postage for the actual weight of the package(s). No handling charge.

Copyright:  This is a significantly cleaned-up and improved version of this image. It is copyright protected and shall not be reproduced without expressed permission.

Licenses:  We own this cleaned-up and improved image and license it for publishing or for use in productions or other products. For each image to be used, a license must be purchased via a separate eBay listing. We list licenses as needed. Click "Ask a question" for more information or to request a license.

Wholesale lots:  If you need a large quantity of this print for framing, for use in classrooms, or for other purposes, please click "Ask a question" to request a wholesale lot. We will create a custom listing in eBay for you. Our products may not be resold in eBay but may be sold elsewhere as long as they are purchased from us in eBay.

Price reductions!  We occasionally mark down many of our popular items for a few days. We announce these sales via email. So, be sure to add us to your favorites list! We are happy to answer your questions. Thanks for looking.
