Fender Stratocaster w/Mods - American Made - 1989/1990

(Relisted due to non-payer.)

I suspect this guitar started life as a Strat Plus. The serial number places it in circulation from 1989-1990. The neck pocket appears to have two dates, the one I can make out is 6/20/1989. The neck itself has a date that appears like 6/1/1988 or 1989, the same stamp that I can't make out in the neck pocket. Looking at the bridge and nut, it seems it has the hardware from a Strat Plus - so you be the judge. Regardless, this is a nice looking guitar for its age.

I purchased this about 10 years ago. It was built up as a "Studio Strat". The original owner had installed 3 extra pickups and 3 extra toggle switches. The wiriing was haphazard to say the least, but this beast could dial in any tone you wanted. It just really wasn't practicle for live use. I put it in storage after a while.

Recently I pulled it out of storage to revisit it - go over electronics, set it up, etc. I liked the idea of all the wiring combinations, but not the current implementation.

Fortunately, I was able to locate a Lace Sensor Holy Grail Loaded Pickguard second-hand. It had custom Lace's installed (sans logo!), and it was wired up by TFN Technologies using their "Ultimod" scheme. This technique turned the bridge tone into a master tone, and turned the second tone knob into a three-position dial.  So basically, you have three banks of pickup settings (parallel/serial/etc.), while the 5-way acts as a preset selector. Kinda rad. And live-friendly.

The guitar looks great for it's age. There are a couple dents in the clear coat, and some belt rash on the back, and other things you'd expect for a 20 year old guitar (swirling, pick marks on guard, etc). Nothing crazy though. Nothing that broke into the wood. Frets have been polished and have plenty of life left. Neck feels awesome.

I have it setup fairly low @ 3/32". This works for me in my environment with very slight buzz (not audible in amp.) You may want to do a full setup on your own for your environment/climate. I'll include the allen wrench for the saddles, but nothing else as far as tools. If you don't have a set of tools to do a proper setup, then you'll need to take it to a guitar tech.

The guitar comes with a non-original hardshell case (no pictured). The case won't stay open at 90 degrees, it just folds back flat - so fair warning.

I can not currently find the trem arm, and I don't recall if I ever had it (I never play with trem anyway so it was no big deal to me.) I'll keep looking and if I find it, I'll include it - but don't count on it.

The original white backplate has been reinstalled (unlike the picture.)

Auction includes: Guitar, Non-original hardshell case

Strings will be loosened to avoid neck tension, hard paper will be placed between the strings and the fretboard to protect the frets, and extra packing will be placed in the case to prevent any movement. It will then be packed in an appropriate guitar box.

Contact me for shipping to Alaska or Hawaii before bidding - it will be higher.

No international sales, sorry folks - I won't reply to those messages.

I will only ship to the address PayPal tells me to ship to. I will also insure my shipments. I will always request a signature.

PLEASE NOTE: This is listed elsewhere. I reserve the right to cancel bids and sell outside of eBay until 12 hours before end of auction. If it is less than 12 hours until auction close and there are bids, I will not cancel the auction.

Immediate payment is required with BIN auctions. Highest bid auctions require payment within 96 hours or eBay will *automatically* open a case and probably ding your account with some bad mojo. So, if you don't have the money or if you aren't going to be around to pay when the auction ends or if you are prone to multiple family/personal/other emergencies that take you to some place on this planet that does not have internet service, well… you probably shouldn't be looking at this listing.

More images to show the condition of the frets, a small blemish on the headstock, the route, the case, and a close-up of the branding on the bottom of the pickup.

On Feb-21-12 at 15:19:04 PST, seller added the following information:

I had many questions from a potential buyer, which led me to add the pictures to help answer the questions. Since they included their email address in the query, I felt it inappropriate to attach my answers to the auction, which would expose their email.

Here are my answers to those questions:

I have added additional pictures showing that the frets are not lifting; the case is a non-branded non-fender case which does not stay open at 90 degrees, per description; that the guitar fits in the case and it closes; that i found the trem bar; a small cosmetic mar on the bottom back of the headstock; a picture of the cavity route.

The neck has about a 1/16" downward bow in the center. The back of the neck (and the body) has some wear on it as would be typical for a 20+ year old guitar that has been played, but nothing additional that I can capture with my camera. The wear on the back of the neck is mostly divits and small dings, which to me seems typical for a 20+ year old played guitar.

All in all it's in good shape.

I have never played "regular" Lace Sensor Holy Grail's so I can't tell you if they sound different than covered Holy Grails, if those even exist (I'm not a Lace expert - I've only played Red, Yellow, Blue and Silver.)

Another thing to note - the dual-conductive shielding tape under the body cavity ground screw was placed their by me as a precaution to ensure ground contact with the factory shielding paint, as I noticed some of the paint had chipped off from the edge of the screw hole.
