I often purchase box lots of antique children's books at auctions. It is not uncommon to find damaged books in these collections that have little to no value as a book, but that do have wonderful pictures that are in good condition. Sometimes these prints have even been signed by artist. When a book is past saving and I find these prints I offer the prints for sale individually. You can see the ones we currently have in our eBay store-in the ART --> Print --> Unframed section.

This prints is from a book titled "Berta and Elmer Harder's Picture Book of Mother Goose" . It was published by Coward-McCann Inc. N.Y., and has a copyright date of 1930. The book measured approximately 8 1/2" by 9".

Each image measures approx 8 3/8" by 9" The paper has a soft finish--and I would guess it has a high rag content. There is a blue and yellow scalloped edge around each of each prints. (One side of the frame is thinner that the other three--it is the side tat was closest to the book's binding.) There are sometimes pictures or text on the back sides of the prints. I believe these are lithograph prints. The colors used in these prints are lovely! They are nice enough to frame and would make wonderful decorations for a child's room.

Berta Hader (1891-1976) & Elmer Hader (1889-1973)

American husband and wife authors and illustrators who wrote and/or illustrated a large number of children's books.

Berta was born in Mexico, although moved to the USA when very young. She showed artistic and literary talent from an early age, winning prizes for both disciplines. She studied both journalism and design and worked for a time in the fashion industry.

Elmer was born in California. Although he had ambitions to become an artist he first worked in the forces, as a firefighter and in theater. He did however find time to study art and design.

The pair met in New York and soon married. Afterwards they began to write and illustrate a number of periodical articles for children, then turned to writing and illustrating children's books. One of their books won the prestigious Caldecott Medal. Elmer's works were also admired by the literary great John Steinbeck who asked him to illustrate the covers of a number of his books.

Berta and Elmer were dedicated conservationists and pacifists and championed animal welfare. Animals appear in many of their books, including ponies and donkeys. All their equine titles are for younger readers and have lots of charming illustrations.
