I am listing my exceptionally beautiful antique crazy quilt. I have owned this quilt for about 15 years. I purchased it at an antique show in Hopkinton, NH. The quilt had just been found at an estate in Hopkinton, NH and was put out for sale for the first time on the day I purchased it. This quilt is in amazing condition, no holes in the quilt, no fraying silk, no stains or fading. (There are few tiny holes in the lace trim on the back where it is sewn to the edge of the quilt, not on the quilt itself) The colors are beautiful and bright. It was found folded in a trunk. As long as I have owned it, it has been carefully stored in acid free tissue in a white cotton bag in a closet in my smoke free home, so it's condition remains excellent. It has been carefully displayed once at a quilt show with an antique quilt exhibit where I loaned it for just a few days.
The quilt measures 54.5 inches by 66 inches. It would have been made circa 1885, sometime in the era after 1872. There are several commemorative ribbons from "World's Peace Jubilee 1872" an event held in the Back Bay area of Boston. It was a huge event. 'World's Peace Jubilee and International Music Festival' lasted 18 days and commemorated the ending of the Franco-Prussian War. It is multi colored and the fabrics are silk, velvet and brocade. There is a thin cotton batting and is embroidered to a foundation. Diagonal quilting 1.5 inches apart is visible on the back only. There are 30 eleven inch square blocks set five across by six down. It is densely embroidered with Kate Greenaway figures. Kate Greenaway was an illustrator of children's books in the late 19th century. The backing is made of mauve striped silk. The edge finish is straight applied claret silk binding with a 4 to 4.5 inch netted lace edging. The embroidery is exquisitely done. Embroideries include shamrocks, cat of nine tails, wheat and spider webs. Wheat is a symbol of prosperity and spider webs are good luck symbols. Please ask questions before bidding. I will ship promptly. |
