Liz Phair makes the kind of music you either love or hate. I absolutely love this cd but can understand why some people may not enjoy it. She writes great songs, funny, smart and heartbreaking at the same time. But she uses profanity and her voice is not commercial so she was mainly a college radio star (which is where/when I found her). Now she has made some commercial songs, played in several movies - I guess to give them some sort of female empowerment vibe. If you enjoy her music from her self-titled cd on (2003) then this cd may not be for you. That cd is all pop, this one is RAW. Sure, she still uses profanity on that one but in THIS cd Liz does not mince words. If you like alternative rock from the 90's you MUST get this cd.
I am 62 years old and I am stunned by Liz Phair's music. Where was she when I was 25? I have only found one woman I have EVER met anywhere near as sarcastic and still vulnerable like Liz. And Ally didn't write music... This was the first CD of Liz' that I ever heard. Later on, I found out that Rolling Stone proclaimed it one of the top 100 albums of all time ! I would put it in my personal top 20. Her creative and sarcastic use of language, the incredibly subtle and sensuous nuances she makes with mere words (imagine in person she would be even more evocative), and her obviously innate sexiness make this whole album one that can be listened to over and over. There really is nothing I dislike about it. The one "semi-political" song in it seems out of place, but is still very listenable. How she combines such passion, emotional sensitivity, and outrageous sarcasm in one album is a wonder to behold and to listen to ! Come do a concert in PA, please, Liz !!!!!!!!Read full review
This album is a fantastic piece of work that has all the positive points of shock value. The album is very well put together and has such interesting themes and execution. Sure its more than a bit potty mouth but no one can sing such vulgarity as sweetly as Liz. It is a staple not just in a Liz Phair collection, but in a well rounded rock history collection as well. Buy the album and listen to it on the way to work (after you drop off the kids).
This is the essential Liz Phair album -- the one everyone knows her for. The musicianship is there, the vocals are there, the lyrics are there. She remains one of the forces to be reckoned with ion the world of rock n roll.
all good.
