Exceptional LYONS & COULSON 8.5 FOOT "L&C CAPTAIN" #402 Fly Rod in Original Tube
You are bidding on an Exceptional LYONS & COULSON 8.5 FOOT "L&C CAPTAIN" #402 Fly Rod in the Original Tube. This is another item from a group of articles from an estate collection from Bar Harbor's Gilded age we will be offering this week. This piece is one of the nicest early LYONS & COULSON split bamboo fly rods I've ever seen, and I have been a Maine Guide and Fly Rod collector for many years. This one is the "L&C CAPTAIN" No. 402 model in the 8 1/2 foot length, weighing in at 5 1/8 ounces. The rod has been stored for many years inside its original cloth sleeve and secured inside the original, fully labeled, leatherette rod tube. The label indicates the make, model, size and weight, though as we know these rods were actually manufactured by Heddon for sale by Lyon & Coulson of New York. The original Sefton screw-top case in in very nice original condition, showing only minor signs of use and handling and the original gold label is still quite crisp and clear, with only minor loss of finish along the lower edge. The hand-lettered model, size and weight numbers are also crisp and clear. The original metal screw-cap is also in fine condition and turns on and off smoothly. The leatherette finish is clean and shows little sign of use or wear. The original cloth bag is likewise in very near original condition, with no apparent wear or deterioration, leading me to believe that this rod was rarely ever used or even removed from the case. The real gem though, is the wonderful 3-piece rod inside. There are of course actually four pieces and both original tip sections are included. Both are exactly the same length, measuring 34 1/2 inches long, (as do all four pieces in fact), neither showing any evidence of damage or repair. The original deep red silk windings are in excellent condition and all of the loop guides and tip loops are in place, intact and show little sign of use. None of the windings are loose and there is no evidence of separation to the cane on either tip section, both exhibiting nice, clear varnish, lightly darkened from age. The ferrules are also clean and straight and all of them insert and unplug smoothly. Both tips are also very straight, showing no sign of bending or loss of their fine, aged temper. The center section is also in equally nice condition, clean, clear varnish throughout, nice original red silks, no damage to any of the guides or the ferrules, and no separation of the cane. Again, very little evidence of use appears. The butt section is also in excellent original condition, the cork handle showing almost no sign of use, no discoloration and no chips, cracks or signs of damage. The seat is the original nickel over brass and shows very minor wear from the reel, a little scuffing of the finish under the real plates only. The original threaded lock works smoothly and the sliding foot plate is also in place and intact and slides smoothly to cover the head of the reel plate. The original windings are again in fine red silk with good varnish, clear and crisp and showing little sign of use. The agate-lined stripping guide is also in fine condition, as is the original hook-keeper just forward of the handle. The ferrule is straight and true and slides smoothly into the next section. The finish has a couple of small nicks to the varnish just aft of the stripping guide, otherwise this piece, like the others is in very nice original condition and shows little sign of use. The rod, when assembled has a nice feel in the hand, is light but stout at the butt and still very flexible. It would probably be considered correct for a 4-weight line, though would likely perform very nicely if underloaded with a lighter weight. It has a good feel and carries the line nicely through the guides and both tip sections react exactly the same. It throws a nice line with my 4-weight on a light Valentine Trout Reel, without stressing the tips and it loads very quickly without much effort. Overall, one of the nicest examples of this fine early rod, sure to be a wonderful addition to you collection and also sure to be a great Trout Rod on your favorite backwoods water. PLEASE NOTE: This collection of Bar Harbor artifacts also includes the wonderul Hand-made Woven Split Willow Fly Fishing Creel with complete Shoulder Strap which was found with this Fly Rod, along with several other interesting bits of Fishing Memorabilia so please check our other auction listings as they will all end the same day.
