Engravng "BOTTLE NOSED WHALE 2" - from Palmer's "Works of John Hunter"-1837

    ANTIQUE MEDICAL ENGRAVINGS

This genuine 176 year old lithograph was published in "THE WORKS OF JOHN HUNTER, F.R.S." published in London by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green & Longman in 1837.  It was engraved by Skelton.

This print is in good condition with mild age toning.  The size of the image is about 6 " x 5 " on a page that is 11 " x 8 1/4 ".     A copy of the text explaining the print will be included with the print.

John Hunter F.R.S. (1728 – 1793) was a Scottish surgeon regarded as one of the most distinguished scientists and surgeons of his day. He was an early advocate of careful observation and scientific method in medicine

In 1768 Hunter was appointed as surgeon to St. George’s Hospital. Later he became a member of the Company of Surgeons. In 1776 he was appointed surgeon to King George III.  In 1790 he was made Surgeon General by the then Prime Minister William Pitt.

Contributions to medicine

Hunter was considered one of the three greatest surgeons in medical history and transformed surgery from a craft into a science. Among his numerous contributions to medical science are:

  • study of human teeth. He coined the names cuspid, incisor, molar,  etc.
  • extensive study of inflation
  • fine work on gunshot wounds (see above)
  • some work on venereal diseases, in addition to his work following his likely self-experimentation.
  • an understanding of the nature of digestion, and verifying that fats are absorbed into the lacteals, a type of small intestine, lymphatic capillary, and not into the intestinal blood capillaries as was generally accepted.
  • the first complete study of the development of a child
  • proof that the maternal and foetal blood supplies are separate
  • defining of one of the major anatomical mysteries of the time – the role of the lymphatic system.

In addition, Hunter’s lifelong study of comparative anatomy and the beginnings of life led him to promote revolutionary views that were clear precursors of Darwin’s theories of evolution.
