Great unit for small branches. The straighter the limb the better. It handles half to one inch limbs very well. If the limb is crooked it is more difficult to feed into the hopper and sometimes may jam. It will takes smaller limbs as well but doesn't always chop them up. The unit is not made for leaves but you can feed leaves through it. They pretty much pass through untouched. The only thing I didn't like was the paddle holder which is very flemsy but the only time it is used is during storage so it's no big deal. Overall I'm very pleased with this device.

The 12 year old Harbor Freight chipper we had performed much better and was more solidly built. This chipper tries to push the branches back up rather than pull them down through. Not as powerful even though they are both rated at 15 amps. Does not grind the branches well, big chunks rather than the nice mulch the HF unit produced. Since all of the newer style electric choppers seem to be built the same way, we are now looking for a gas chipper.

It works pretty good. The feed hole is small so really only small branches with few additional side branches will feed into the chipper.

I have not tried 1-1/2" and I feel like it would be a struggle. For smaller, garden mulch, It is perfect, but noisy. Also, wear gloves.
