Based on a true life story. Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez and the rest of the cast did a great. Even with Hector Lavoe's unfortunate events he is a legend for Salsa Lovers. Took place in New York and Puerto Rico. Great memories of my childhood Everytime I watch this movie.

This has become one of my favorite movies. The characters were glamorous and exciting and I love the fact that you actually got to hear most of the music. Marc Anthony's singing in this movie was soooo beautiful that I had to buy the soundtrack. He brought Hector to life! JLo made you want to watch her over and over again for fashion inspiration.

I love this movie! I love that Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony rendered an amazing tribute to the history of salsa by commemorating the life of Hector Lavoe- one of the greatest salseros of all time. The movie did focus on many of the not-so-pleasant moments of his life, but it's real. The movie is real. I love how music entrances the viewer and follows the storyline of the movie, and how magnificently woven into the plot are other members of the Fania and famous musicians like Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, Johnny Pacheco, etc. This movie is funny, poignant, emotional, and a party all bundled together. At times triste pero no vacía. Buy it!
Based on the life of salsa legend Hector Lavoe, director Leon Ichaso's EL CANTANTE, follows the beloved Puerto Rican performer (played by Marc Anthony) as he moves to New York City, and rises through the Bronx's vibrant Latin music scene during the 1960s and '70s. Singing with popular trombonist/bandleader Willie Colon (John Ortiz), Lavoe goes on to a successful solo career, but along the way, he becomes a drug addict, sabotaging not only his music, but his relationship with Puchi (a.k.a. Nilda Roman, portrayed by Jennifer Lopez).
Aside from the misrepresentation of the lyrics on the songs, this is an excellent pick. If you like Salsa, you'll love this movie. I'm not about to give away plots or scenes, you'll just have to buy it and see for yourselves. It has everything you could expect, music, drug use, profanity, and self destruction. To truly understand and appreciate the music industry in those days, you just has to be there. So if you weren't then this is as close as you'll come. The clubs, night life and expressionism that were experienced in those days are gone and this movie brings a portion of that feeling back to life. ENJOY
