Image of the Jersey Devil in Cabinet Door Wood Grain
Over the years the world has seen many instances of familiar images appearing in unlikely places; the faces of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa seem to pop up with regularity on everything from shadows on fences, water stains and hospital windows to grilled cheese sandwiches, cinnamon buns and tortillas. This phenomenon is known as pareidolia, a form of apophenia where people see shapes or faces in random patterns.
This listing does not involve Jesus, Mary, Pope John Paul II or Mother Teresa.
This is for something just a bit on the darker side.
People the world over and particularly the residents of New Jersey are familiar with the long-standing legend of the Jersey Devil. He is far and away the most well-known figure in New Jersey folklore, even lending his name to the state’s NHL team.
One version of the story tells of an 18th century woman named Leeds whose indolent husband did little to support her and their 12 children. Upon learning that she was pregnant with her 13th child, she vowed in a fit of exasperation to “let this one be a devil”, and apparently got her wish. When the child was born it reportedly turned into an unearthly beast with horns, wings and hooves, attacking and killing the woman, her midwives and many of her family before disappearing into the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, where it has lived ever since, terrorizing the countryside on and off for well over 250 years, attacking livestock and people alike.
In 1958, at the construction site of a home in the small New Jersey town of Belle Mead, I believe the Jersey Devil chose to leave his mark, his image forever ingrained into the wood of a kitchen cabinet door. Perhaps the wood itself was harvested from a “Devil’s Tree” within the territory haunted by the beast.
The homeowners referred to the image as “the monkey”, and indeed it does look somewhat like a snarling mandrill, but this was just a comforting way to reassure the children that the face staring back at them had only friendly intentions. But it bears a striking similarity to the many of the eyewitness descriptions of the Jersey Devil, with its large eyes, ears, horns and what appear to be fangs where its chin should be.
The pictures have not been doctored or retouched, and the image is not painted on or otherwise applied: it is in the grain of the wood itself, and the varnish that the wood is finished with only enhances the image. The image only appears in a thin veneer, as it does not appear on the reverse side of the door (see photo). It’s also not difficult to see the image, nor does it have to be seen in certain lighting or from just the right angle: the face jumps right out at the viewer!
The cabinet door was removed prior to the sale of the house and still has its original handle and mounting hardware attached. It has been kept in a garage (along with a crucifix or two and some holy water to ward off evil, just in case) and has not been disturbed since. The door measures 23⅜” x 13½” x ¾” thick.
