About Edwin Chan

Edwin Chan received his Bachelor of Arts from the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley, and Master of Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard. During his graduate studies, he was a summer intern at the office of Machado/Silvetti in Boston, as well as a research assistant for the book: Guiseppe Terragni - Transformation, Decomposition, Critique by Peter Eisenman.

After graduation, Edwin joined Frank O. Gehry & Associates in Los Angeles, and has worked on many of the firm’s most significant architectural projects, including the Nationale-Nederlanden Building in Prague, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, and the hotel at the Marques de Riscal Winery in El Ciego, Spain.
Currently Mr. Chan is a Partner of the firm, collaborating with Mr. Gehry on the design of a number of current projects that include an office building for Novartis International in Basel, Switzerland, the Louis Vuitton Foundation for Creation in Paris, France, and the Extension to the Philadelphia Museum of Arts. In addition, he also designed The Art of Motorcycle Exhibition for the Guggenheim Museum, the exhibition “Exquisite Pain” for renowned French Artist Sophie Calle in Luxembourg, as well as the set design for the opera Ariadne Auf Naxos by Richard Strauss in Los Angeles.

Most recently, Mr. Chan received the honor of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the Republic of France. Currently, Mr. Chan is on sabbatical from Gehry Partners; since 2010, he has served as visiting professor of architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Architecture for Humanity lends time and expertise to help those who cannot otherwise afford these services. Each year 25,000 people directly benefit from structures designed by Architecture for Humanity, and to date the organization has built community centers, schools and housing for communities in 22 countries, including rebuilding in Japan and Haiti. Many of our projects can be viewed in detail on our partner site at Open Architecture Network.

From conception to completion, we manage all aspects of the design and construction process with the expertise of our Design Fellows, young and emerging architects who join us to give their full time to one or more of our projects. Our clients include community groups, aid organizations, housing developers, government agencies, corporate divisions, and foundations. architectureforhumanity.org
