Offered for Auction: Lovely Early 20th C. Pyrographic Keepsake Box with Grapes & Leaves. Pyrography was a popular hobby in the late Victorian era where wood burning tools were used to create these lovely boxes, plaques and decorative furniture pieces. Kits were sold to the masses and the craze was born, one of the biggest suppliers was the Flemish Art Company in New York. This box is numbered 688 and appears to be part of a series of other grape and leaves patterns. This is a hand decorated box and not a pre "stamped" one. My guess is this box was decorated in the early aughts or teens and is beautifully detailed. The box has a semi-gloss varnish.
Condition: Fair given its age. There are some finish problems however, the top edges of the lid are worn as shown. There are a few drips of light colored paint on the top. The right front corner of the box has a chip where the front joins the side as shown. The latch catch is a little loose. The interior of the box is musty. The box measures 6 1/4" W x 5 3/4" D x 2 3/8" H and weighs 6 oz.
A nice addition to anyone's Flemish Art or Pyrography collection.
