1).  PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE ITEM DESCRIPTION AND VIEW ALL 12 PICTURES BEFORE BIDDING.

2).  I NEVER ENHANCE OR ALTER PICTURES, NOR DO I INTENTIONALLY MISREPRESENT THE ITEMS I SELL.

3). THE AGE OF AN ITEM CAN BE VERY SUBJECTIVE IN SOME CASES, ESPECIALLY ASIAN ITEMS, AND IS MY OPINION. I MAINLY USE 3 TERMS TO DESCRIBE THE AGE OF ANY ITEM:

A. ANTIQUE - AN ITEM THAT, IN MY OPINION, WAS MADE PRIOR TO 1937.

B. OLD - I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A VERY GENERAL TERM BUT IF I CANNOT DEFINITIVELY SAY THAT SOMETHING WAS MADE PRIOR TO 1937 (ANTIQUE), I WILL CATEGORIZE IT AS "OLD". FOR MY AUCTIONS SOMETHING THAT IS CATEGORIZED AS "OLD" IS AN ITEM THAT, IN MY OPINION, WAS MADE POST 1937  TO THE PRESENT. IF I DO CATEGORIZE SOMETHING AS "OLD", I USUALLY GIVE A MORE SPECIFIC TIME FRAME IN THE DESCRIPTION OR HEADING SUCH AS, MID 20TH CENTURY OR LATE 20TH CENTURY.

C. NEW - NEVER USED. I VERY, VERY, RARELY SELL NEW ITEMS.

4). I AM ALWAYS WILLING TO WORK WITH THE BUYER!! I UNDERSTAND IF A LITTLE MORE TIME IS NEEDED TO MAKE PAYMENT. HOWEVER, IF YOU BID IN ONE OF MY AUCTIONS, MAKE NO ATTEMPT AT COMMUNICATION IN EXPLAINING THE SITUATION, OR SIMPLY DO NOT INTEND ON PAYING, A CASE WITH E-BAY WILL BE FILED.

5). PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THAT I MIGHT HAVE MISSED SOMETHING THAT WOULD ENHANCE THE VALUE OR AGE.

6). I WILL NOT LIE ON CUSTOM'S FORMS. INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL CUSTOM'S FEES.

7). GOOD LUCK!

MY #1 PRIORITY IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION!

IF, FOR ANY REASON, YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH YOUR PURCHASE, PLEASE E-MAIL ME WITHIN 3 DAYS OF RECEIVING THE MERCHANDISE. IF AN AGREEMENT CANNOT BE MET, I WILL REFUND 100% OF YOUR MONEY, LESS SHIPPING COSTS, GUARANTEED! WITH THAT SAID, PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE FEEDBACK OR DETAILED SELLER RATINGS (DSR) WITHOUT BEING 100% SATISFIED WITH YOUR PURCHASE. IF YOU FEEL IT NECESSARY TO LEAVE ANYTHING LESS THAN A 5 ON THE DSR'S, YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT COMPLETELY HAPPY WITH THE TRANSACTION. PLEASE GIVE ME A CHANCE TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION BEFORE YOU TARNISH MY RATINGS WITH A LOW DSR EVALUATION. DETAILED SELLER RATINGS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT TO SELLERS AS POSITIVE FEEDBACK. I WILL GLADLY WORK OUT ANY DISCREPANCIES YOU MAY HAVE. FURTHERMORE, IF YOU DO NOT PLAN ON PAYING FOR THE ITEM OR INSIST I LIE ON CUSTOMS FORMS, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE PART IN MY AUCTIONS. LASTLY, PLEASE SAVE ME AS A SELLER AS I AM ALWAYS LISTING INTERESTING, QUALITY ITEMS STARTING AT $.99 AND ALL AT NO RESERVE!

DESCRIPTION

I WILL BE LISTING MANY ANTIQUE AND ESTATE CHINESE, AMERICAN, AND EUROPEAN ITEMS THROUGHOUT THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS SO PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON MY AUCTIONS. UP FOR A NO RESERVE AUCTION IS A VERY RARE LOT OF 3 ANTIQUE MINIATURE WATERCOLORS ON IVORY. I ACQUIRED THESE AT A PENNSYLVANIA AUCTION, ALL SEPARATELY, BUT BECAUSE OF THE INFORMATION I HAVE RECEIVED, FROM THE AUCTION HOUSE AND MY OWN RESEARCH, I FEEL THESE NEED TO BE KEPT TOGETHER. IF I DID NOT 100% TRUTHFULLY BELIEVE THE INFORMATION I AM ABOUT TO REVEAL, I WOULD SELL THEM SEPARATELY. THE LADY WAS ADVERTISED AS "MARY ELIZABETH HIESTER MUHLENBERG, GRANDDAUGHTER OF THE FIRST GOVENOR OF PENNSYLVANIA". THE LARGER PORTRAIT WAS ADVERTISED AS, " EDWARD JONATHAN DEININGER, MARRIED TO A. MUHLENBERG, DAUGHTER OF HENRY MUHLENBERG, WHO WAS AMBASSADOR TO AUSTRIA IN 1838". THE 3RD AND SMALLEST MINIATURE WAS ADVERTISED WITH NO INFORMATION. MY INVESTIGATION ALL STARTED WHEN MY WIFE SAW THEM AND SAID, "WOW, THOSE 2 GUYS LOOK TO BE THE SAME PERSON". AS I LOOKED HARDER AT THE 2 GENTLEMAN I STARTED TO REALIZE THAT THESE 2 GENTLEMAN COULD BE THE SAME PERSON. I THEN LOOKED AT THE INITIALS ON THE BACK OF THE LITTLE ONE THROUGH MAGNIFICATION BECAUSE IT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO MAKE OUT THAN THE LARGER ONE (PICTURES 6 & 7 ARE THE BACKS OF THE 2 PORTRAITS OF THE 2 GENTLEMAN). TO MY SURPRISE THE INITIALS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME, "EJD" FOR EDWARD JONATHAN DEININGER, OR SO I THOUGHT, MORE ON THAT LATER. THEY ARE ALSO DONE IN ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME SCRIPT. I DO BELIEVE THESE 2 GENTLEMAN ARE THE SAME PERSON, THE LARGER ONE HAVING BEEN DONE LATER. WHAT IS THE COINCIDENCE THAT ONE PERSON (PREVIOUS OWNER, THE AUCTION HOUSE WOULD CONFIRM THIS FOR ME) IS GOING TO HAVE 2 MINIATURES WITH EXACTLY THE SAME INITIALS IN EXACTLY THE SAME SCRIPT UNLESS THEY WERE OF THE SAME PERSON? NOT VERY LIKELY. THERE IS MORE. THIS IS WHEN I CALLED THE AUCTION HOUSE TO GET MORE INFORMATION FROM THE CONSIGNER, BUT DUE TO PRIVACY CONCERNS, ALL THE AUCTION HOUSE WOULD DO WAS TAKE MY PHONE NUMBER AND GIVE IT TO THE CONSIGNER AND I COULD HOPE THEY WOULD CALL ME.....THEY DID NOT. THE AUCTIONEER DID TELL ME THAT 1 PERSON HAD CONSIGNED ALL 3 AT THE SAME TIME (RELATIVES?). THAT IS WHEN I STARTED MY SEARCH ON MY OWN AND WHAT I DISCOVERED WAS QUITE FRANKLY, FANTASTIC. I FIRST STARTED SEARCHING FOR THE GENTLEMAN, EDWARD JONATHON DEININGER. TO MY AMAZEMENT, I FOUND NOTHING AT ALL. THEN I SWITCHED TO MISS MUHLENBERG AND ALL OF THE PIECES STARTED TO FIT PERFECTLY, AND I MEAN LIKE A GLOVE, INCLUDING SOME VALUABLE INFORMATION THAT WAS CHANGED AROUND OR LOST THROUGH THE YEARS. I FOUND THE FAMILY TREE CHART FOR HER, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN TO THE WINNING BIDDER, AND COME TO FIND OUT, SHE WAS MARRIED TO A MAN NAMED EHRGOTT JONATHON DEININGER! HIS NAME IS NOT EDWARD, IT'S EHRGOTT! SO....SINCE SHE WAS MARRIED TO EHRGOTT AND THE SMALLER ONE IS DONE IN EXACTLY THE SAME MANNER AS HERS, AND MOST DEFINITELY BY THE SAME ARTIST, CONSIDERING THE BACKGROUNDS, PROFILES, STYLE, ETC....., THESE MUST HAVE BEEN DONE AROUND THE SAME TIME. SO I STARTED TO LOOK FOR A LINK HERE. MARY ELIZABETH HEISTER MUHLENBERG AND EHRGOTT JONATHAN DEININGER WERE MARRIED ON JUNE 3, 1834. THIS DATE FITS EXACTLY WITH THE FRAME STYLES ON BOTH AND THE STYLE OF THEIR DRESS IN THE PORTRAITS. GIVEN THAT INFORMATION, I BELIEVE THESE 2 MINIATURES WERE A WEDDING GIFT TO EACH OTHER. NOW FOR THE LARGEST PORTRAIT OF MR. DEININGER. I WAS KIND OF CURIOUS AS TO WHY THERE WAS ANOTHER PORTRAIT DONE OF HIM AND NOT HER. COME TO FIND OUT, MARY ELIZABETH DIED 4 YEARS AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE, ON FEBRUARY 21, 1838. HE PROBABLY HAD HIS PORTRAIT DONE AT A LATER DATE, AFTER HIS WIFE HAD PASSED, WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN THE AGING APPEARANCE AND THE CONSIDERABLY LARGER SIZE OF THE PORTRAIT. THIS PORTRAIT WAS PROBABLY DONE BY A DIFFERENT ARTIST. WHEN YOU PUT ALL OF THIS TOGETHER, YOU HAVE ALL 3 PORTRAITS LINKED, 2 OF 3 ARE OF THE SAME PERSON AND 2 OF 3 ARE MARRIAGE PORTRAITS!!! A FANTASTIC AND EXTREMELY RARE FIND!!! I WILL TELL YOU THAT I DID HAVE THESE CAREFULLY OPENED, HOPING TO FIND MORE INFORMATION, BUT THERE WAS NONE. HOWEVER, IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THE WHOLE STORY FITS PERFECTLY. NOW YOU ASK, WELL WHAT IF THE NAMES ARE MADE UP AND HOW DO WE KNOW THE NAMES ARE CORRECT? WELL, THE 2 MINIATURES OF EHRGOTT DO HAVE HIS INITIALS ON THEM AND WHY WOULD THE CONSIGNER PURPOSELY GET THE FIRST NAME WRONG UNLESS THEY HAD JUST BEEN CHANGED A LITTLE THROUGH THE GENERATIONS AND I HIGHLY DOUBT THAT THEY PULLED THESE SPECIFIC NAMES OUT OF THIN AIR.  FURTHERMORE, THE MARRIAGE PORTRAITS ARE DONE MOST DEFINITELY BY THE SAME ARTIST, WHICH BY THE WAY, IF THIS COULD BE FIGURED OUT, I AM SURE SOMEONE WILL KNOW, WILL MAKE THESE EXTRAORDINARILY VALUABLE. I HAVE LOOKED FOR THE DISTINCT CLOUD BACKGROUND AND PAINTING STYLE BY A MINIATURE ARTIST PAINTING IN AND AROUND PHILADELPHIA IN 1834-1835 AND HAVE COME UP WITH A COUPLE BUT CANNOT DEFINITIVELY ATTRIBUTE THESE TO AN ARTIST. LASTLY, IF YOU HAVE TAKEN EVERYTHING INTO ACCOUNT, THERE WOULD BE TOO MUCH OF A COINCIDENCE TO DISMISS THIS AS A RANDOM OCCURENCE. SO.....TO RECAP, WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE UNDENIABLE IS THAT WE HAVE A RARE FIND OF HUSBAND AND WIFE PORTRAITS, MARY ELIZABETH HEISTER MUHLENBERG & EHRGOTT JONATHAN DEININGER AND A LATER MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF MR. DEININGER!!! I WOULD VERY HIGHLY SUSPECT THAT THE CONSIGNER WAS A RELATIVE AND THESE HAVE DESCENDED IN THE FAMILY.

NOW FOR THE FAMILY - THE MUHLENBERGS'/HEISTERS' WERE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FAMILIES IN PENNSYLVANIA IN THE LATE 18TH AND THROUGHOUT THE 19TH CENTURIES. THERE IS TOO MUCH INFORMATION TO LIST HERE BUT A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH WILL GIVE YOU MORE THAN ENOUGH. ALL OF THE INFORMATION I AM GOING TO GIVE HERE IS ON MARY ELIZABETH HEISTER MUHLENBERGS' GRANDFATHER. HIS NAME WAS JOSEPH HEISTER AND HE WAS BORN IN BERN TOWNSHIP, BERKS COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA, NOVEMBER 18TH, 1752. DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, HE RAISED A COMPANY OF EIGHTY MEN IN 1776, WHICH BECAME PART OF THE "FLYING CAMP" AND PARTICIPATED IN BATTLE. HE WAS TAKEN PRISONER AND LATER RELEASED DURING A  PRISONER EXCHANGE. HE STAYED INACTIVE FOR ONLY A SHORT TIME AND SOON RESUMED HIS DUTIES IN THE ARMY, PARTICIPATING IN THE BATTLE OF GERMANTOWN. FOLLOWING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, HE SERVED IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND WAS ONE OF THE DELEGATES TO THE CONSTITUTION OF PENNSYLVANIA IN 1790. HE WAS THE FIRST STATE SENATOR AND SERVED IN CONGRESS DURING THE LATE 18TH CENTURY TO THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY FOR SEVERAL YEARS. HE WAS ELECTED THE FIRST GOVENOR OF PENNSYLVANIA AND HAD A MAJOR POLITICAL INFLUENCE AROUND READING, PENNSYLVANIA THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE.

AGE:  2 MARRIAGE MINIATURES - CIRCA 1834. LARGER PORTRAIT OF EHRGOTT JONATHAN DEININGER - CIRCA 1845

CONDITION:  ALL 3 ARE IN SUPERB CONDITION, THE LARGEST ONE DOES HAVE A NICK AT THE RIGHT EDGE AND HAS A GAP AT THE BOTTOM (SEE PICS). THEY ALL HAVE A HAIR RECEPTACLE BUT NONE HAVE HAIR MEMORIALS.

SIZE: LARGEST - 2 3/8" WIDE X 3" TALL, LADY - 2 1/8" WIDE X 2 7/8" TALL, SMALLEST - 1 7/8" WIDE X 2 1/2" TALL.

THIS AUCTION IS FOR ALL 3!! INCLUDED WITH THE 3 MINIATURES WILL ALSO BE ALL OF MY RESEARCH INCLUDING THE FAMILY TREE AND 20 PAGES ON THE MUHLENBERG/HEISTER FAMILY. THESE MINIATURES SHOULD NOT BE SPLIT UP AND I ENCOURAGE THE WINNING BIDDER TO WRITE DOWN, ON THE BACKS OF THE CARDS ON THE INSIDE OF THE CASES, THE INFORMATION REVEALED SO THAT IT IS NOT LOST OR FORGOTTEN AGAIN. AS PER E-BAY RULES THE PAPER THIN SLICE OF IVORY USED IN THESE 19TH CENTURY PORTRAITS IS LESS THAN 5% OF THE TOTAL MASS. SHIPPING WILL BE $15.00 TO ANYWHERE IN THE LOWER 48 STATES. IF YOU LIVE ELSEWHERE, PLEASE E-MAIL ME FOR A SHIPPING PRICE. PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 5 DAYS OF THE AUCTION END UNLESS A MUTUAL AGREEMENT CAN BE MADE. PLEASE CHECK OUT MY E-BAY STORE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ME, VIEW MY OTHER ITEMS UP FOR AUCTION AND AS ALWAYS, THANKS FOR LOOKING!
