The Sony PS-X555ES Biotracer Linear Turntable was the top of the line of the Biotracer models and perhaps the finest turntable ever built by Sony. It was offered in the early 1980's just prior to the mass introduction of CD's in 1982. Since it was a very expensive audiophile single play linear turntable, and very expensive for Sony to manufacture, very few were made. Only a very small portion of these ever show up for resale. This model is avidly sought by audiophiles and collectors.
Sony PS-X555ES Biotracer Linear Tracking Turntable features:
- Gel-filled adjustable feet
- SBMC (Sony Bulk Mold Compound, a composite of polyester and fiberglass) frame with piano gloss finish
- BSL (brushless, slotless) motor
- Xtal Lock and Magnedisk
- Last version of the Biotracer tonearm
The Biotracer was Sony's unique design, and was their solution to the challenge of dealing with tonearm resonances. Japan's engineers at the rival companies tried different solutions and made remarkable progress. But the Biotracer was unique in that it sought to solve the frequency resonance issues between tonearm and phono cartridge. In theory, Sony's arm could accept any cartridge, of any weight and compliance. This is an amazing feat.
Biotracer first appeared on Sony's PS-B70 in 1978, and then was refined on the great PS-X75. I do believe the PS-X555ES was the third-generation model. The PS-X700 was the final refinement of the X75, and the X600 and X500 continued the smaller, sleeker design. The expensive tonearm was finally retired after that point, which is where Sony's decline began to accelerate.
The PS-X555ES is considered one of the finest, if not the finest, linear tracking turntables ever built. The idea is that linear tracking would eliminate tracking errors and inner-groove distortion that is common with traditional tonearms. This approach more closely follows the cutting arms in record pressing plants, and promises the highest quality sound.
The turntable in this listing is excellent plus cosmetically, as you can see in the photos.
This beautiful Sony PS-X555ES BIOTRACER stereo turntable will be packed correctly for shipping by partial disassembly and the use of transit (lock-down screws). I collect the Biotracer turntables and know how to pack them and ship them.
I will be listing more Sony Biotracer turntables in the next several weeks, including the front loading FL77 Linear model, and several X600 machines. Most will play 33 RPM vinyl records beautifully, with some of them functioning fully automatic with both 33 and 45 RPM records; some functioning fully automatic with 33 records and manually with 45 rpm records; and some only functioning fully with 33 records and not playing 45 rpm records. They are priced accordingly, to the desirability of the Model, and as to the functions they provide, so be sure to read fully the description in each separate listing as they are written for that particular machine.
If you have any questions about Biotracer turntables, whether you buy one from me or not, feel free to call me at the phone number given above between 11AM and 11 PM EST, and I will be glad to just chat with you about these great audiophile Sony Biotracer turntables.I prefer them over all others.
This listing also includes professional black & white or color copies of the original factory instructions, original factory service manual and an informational article on this rare Elevated Standard Model.
This listing also includes a nice Sony headstock, dust cover (as described) and a nice Sony 45 rpm adapter. The dust cover is not cracked or chipped, but like almost all vintage dust covers, it does have some small marks from normal use, that can be polished out with plexiglass polish, if you want it to look near new.
The dust cover is in great condition, but it does have a repair to one of the rear hinge slots, so that it can fit over the two hinges when the table is not in use, and removed when you are using the turntable. As you can see in the photos, the repair to the hinge slot was well done, and is not visible to view, so does not distract cosmetically from the very nice appearance of this machine and cover.
