Stuart Gordon is a director that loves the horror genre, especially the works of horror master H.P. Lovecraft. Gordon, who has adapted Lovecraft's stories on the big screen more than a couple of times, does an admiral job at bringing the troubled college student of Walter Gilman (Ezra Godden) from script to screen featurette. The film is suspenseful and faithful to the short story of the same name. The story elements have successfully been modernized to today's standards. It is a terrifying ride through a person's mind as it slowly travels from sanity to insanity. The story surrounds a stressed-out student named Walter Gilman who moves into an old Arkham, Massachusetts boarding house. He uses his computer to work on a graduate thesis on dimensional gateways. He discovers that he may have a dimensional gateway in his own room. A single mother (Chelah Horsdal) provides a love interest for Walter, as well as a catalyst to his madness. Walter is tortured by nightmares which are all too real. He finds that there is a witch and her rat familiar, Brown Jenkin, that beckon him to do evil and murder to further their longevity. Without giving away the ending, Gordon splendidly executes the twist that is common in most of Lovecraft's stories. This DVD is worth seeing for not only for the featurette but for the many bonus extras. Included in the DVD is a trading card of director Stuart Gordon. This is one of thirteen cards in the series that will have some appeal to trading card collectors. A good reason to purchase this item is because of the horror and fantasy factors. Who doesn't like to be afraid or have their imagination assaulted once in a while? This DVD is an excellent vehicle to accomplish these goals.Read full review
CAN Stuart Gordon do any wrong ? Not really......But he can be slack on rare occasions (Castle Freak, mayhaps?) .To take on DREAMS IN THE WITCH HOUSE was/is ambitious & Gordon pulls off some great effects without having to resort to cheap techno wizardry & this video was fun with an able cast & well worth viewing/acquiring to the Lovecraft devotee. The inside extras are as long as the film & offer a great insight into Gordon's creativity. But,oddly,in all that creativity,Gordon barely touches on the truly Lovecraftian aspects of the tale & it becomes merely a good tale centered upon the witch & her familiar & lacks the history of the house & the witch & her familiar within the framework of the Mythos to be called truly great.STILL...worth seeing & getting but it ain't no DAGON or REANIMATOR !Read full review
Like any anthology, "Masters of Horror" was something of a mixed bag -- about a third of them were great, a third were okay, and a third were pretty bad. Fortunately, this is one that falls somewhere between "okay" and "great." Based on a Lovecraft story by frequent-Lovecraft material director Stuart Gordon, this is an effectively creepy tale that hits all the right beats for fans of the horror genre, and is especially satisfying for fans of Gordon's previous work. As with all the original MOH releases, the DVD itself comes full of extras and interesting features, making the already reasonable cost more than worth it. You definitely get more bang for your buck. Not for all tastes, but a solid entry into the horror anthology series and worth an hour of your time if you're a casual fan of horror. Read full review

Can't recommend buying any movie in this series until they come out with a set but there are some great masterpieces. 'Dreams in the Witch House' is creepy & entertaining. The story is an interesting concept & well done. Lovecraft is such a great storyteller when it comes to the macabre. Ezra Godden does a terrific job as he did in 'Dagon'. The rat with a face is also pretty creepy. I know anyone with a fear of mice will find it disturbing as well as the rest of the story. Any Lovecraft or horror fan must watch this film. 4.5/5
The story works and the special effects are good. Obviously made on a small budget but it is Lovecraft so it entertaining.
