This was very simple to use and works perfectly. It does everything it claims to do. You may want to get one with a power supply included or also buy the wall to USB adapter. I wouldn't depend on my more expensive equipment to supply the USB power to the converter. The only reason held back a star is that the cable illustrated (OD 4.0) was not delivered and the lesser quality cable (OD 2.2) was. If they hadn't made such a big deal out of putting that in the picture I wouldn't have cared. With either optical cable it is just SUPER IMPORTANT that you do not crimp them or bend them tightly. Either can break and put your sound in the black - it's just a little harder with the cable that has more insulation. You may also want to point the very bright LED to the wall.

I used this to convert the optical audio output from a TV to a normal stereo signal. It does this just fine, but only with PCM signals. It will just make spitting noises if fed a Dolby Digital signal. Make sure your device supports sending PCM over the optical or S/PDIF output. The TV in question does, but it would revert to Dolby Digital every time it was turned off and back on. (Fortunately, a firmware update fixed this.) A bigger concern is that many devices with optical and/or S/PDIF outputs (including my TV) do not allow you to control the volume level of said output. If you want to hook this to an older generation of receiver that has no remote, you will have to get up and manually turn the volume up and down. Even the MUTE button doesn't work! This isn't the fault of this device, but it still can be a limit on its usefulness.Read full review

Product is working well, and sound quality is also good. Advertisement show, that customer will get high quality optical fiber, but in my case that was not true. I got really thin optical cable.

After we moved our TV, my wife made me get rid of my stereo and th 12" subwoofer I had hiding behind it. I was then forced to listen to television movies though just the TV speakers. I happened to have a set of great sounding 2.1 PC speakers with a mini subwoofer that was the perfect sound and size to connect to my TV, but the TV only had optical audio out and there was no way to connect the speakers until I found this converter. It plugs into the USB on the TV for power and works great. It is the perfect solution if you want enhanced sound, but don't want to connect a stereo or deal with a sound bar. Actually, my tv speakers are pretty good for dialogue and all I really needed was a small subwoofer to enhance the rumble.

I use this device to connect my TV to my audio system. When I first hooked it up I just got a lot of strange noise (I think it was clicking and popping, but it was many weeks ago, so I can't remember exactly) coming out. I rooted around my TV's menu, and found a choice for the digital audio output: PCM, or Auto. The default was Auto, so I changed it to PCM, and the sound then came out perfectly. (I have no idea what kind of output Auto produces, but PCM is, presumably, Pulse Code Modulation.) They should probably put this in the manual, but, other than that, the device seems to work perfectly, and is a great value.
