The Met HD transmissions that are identical to these discs have resided on my DVR's hard drive for several years with several glitches arising from atmospheric conditions. I can now erase them. Given the state of classical recording, this is probably the only documentation we'll see of Deborah Voigt's Brunnhilde. Jay Hunter Morris' Siegfried is captured early in his assumption of the role. It will be interesting to see how he develops. The "machine" staging works pretty well - sort of an updated take of the Wagner brothers' postwar Bayreuth of projections on minimal staging. The high def video can be a double edged sword when the singers block the projected scenery and create a shadow on the stage machine with whatever should be background lighting their faces. Visually, I retain my affection for the Otto Schenk traditional staging aired by PBS in 1990 and now available on DG DVDs - low defintion video and 4:3 ratio notwithstanding. The singing doesn't challenge my benchmark audio only Solti Decca recordings that I own on LP, CD, and Blu-ray audio. That said, I prefer the Met's blu-ray discs to DG's DVD's of of the Boulez/Chereau centennial production with its late 19th century updated staging and costumes. Read full review

I waited to order this because I'm retired and on a tight budget. This is the best price I could find. The performance and quality of the discs are top rate. Highly recommended.

We seem to be having quite a choice. of Ring cycles these days. This Metropolitan Opera production was a smash success when it came out around 2010 and you would be hard-put to find a better-played and sung Ring. This cast beat Levine's cast from the 90s by a long shot. But that Ring presented it pretty much in the form it appeared in 1876 with tradition sets and costumes so it is a historical reading, but this cycle with the Blu=Ray disks and enhanced sound is just better listening. The Robert LePage sets and stage direction are not off-putting and really do enhance the action when needed. I highly recommend this set even with the higher prices being offered.

Finally a Ring I can understand! A staggering achievement. Singing, costumes, lighting, staging, all done to perfection. Did I mention the staging? A creative triumph!
