This version of Death on the Nile stars a truely all star cast headed by Peter Ustinov. Produced in 1978 primarily in Egypt, it also has among the cast Bette Davis, David Niven, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith, Mia Farrow, Olivia Hussey, George Kennedy, Jane Birkin and Jack Warden. Wow! An all star cast that had something going with all their collective talent. John Guillermin probably didn't have a very hard time in directing the stellar cast in a wonderful adaptation of Agatha Christie's mystery. It did win an Academy Award for best costume design, and Lansbury and Maggie Smith were nominees for awards in the picture. Poirot, played by Ustinov, is on vacation and he ends up on a cruise on the Nile river where a very much hated but also very rich woman is murdered. He is called upon to handle the investigation since the police are not available (or capable.) One particular method used by the director has Poirot accusing each of the suspects, and we see a version of how the suspect carried out the act. This is very much like how it was done in the comedy/mystery "Clue" produced in 1985. Inevitably, some try to make a comparison between the characters played by Ustinov and the more recent David Suchet. Ustinov brings a certain dry humor to the character that is very intertaining if you like that sort of thing, while Suchet is so intelligent, but European, and very proper. I truely enjoy both and appreciate the qualities that each bring out in their characters. In summary, this is a very fine film which affords you the opportunity to see so many great actors work well together for a nice finished product. It is a bit long, however, with a run time of 140 minutes. Rated PG, is is suitable for all but the youngest in the family.Read full review
What a gorgeous movie! The 20's dress and hairstyles! The Egyptian setting! And that fabulous tango between staidly, correct Englishman David Niven and a flamboyant romance writer of sexually titalating trash, Angela Lansbury!! The movie stays true to the novel which is a pleasant surprise. I don't think Peter Ustinov makes a great Poirot, but the rest of the actors fit their characters very nicely. Such a feast for the eyes whether you like mysteries or not.
This movie is a classic Peroit. The characters, the settings and the plot are excellent!
