Abby (Brittany Murphy) follows her boyfriend to Japan, but he immediately dumps her. Abby hasn't any friends in Japan and doesn't speak Japanese. She stumbles into a ramen restaurant, becomes fascinated by the process of making ramen, and begs the owner to teach her. He doesn't speak English, and he thinks Abby might be insane. But he agrees to teach her, mainly to get cheap labor to clean up. He is never satisfied with Abby's efforts and dumps out her ramen without tasting it. To enjoy this film, you must be adept at reading subtitles, since much of the humor derives from conversations in which Abby and the Japanese man can't understand each other. It is also funny because the ramen-making process and the relationship between Abby and her teacher is played as if this were THE KARATE KID. As the audience gradually gets inside the hearts and minds of Abby and her teacher, THE RAMEN GIRL becomes a poignant story of loss, friendship, and self-discovery. Viewers who start out laughing at Abby will start crying for her, then cheering her on. The happy ending is improbable, but Brittany Murphy's appealing performance makes you believe.Read full review
I found this movie engaging. I don't fully know why I watched this movie a second time (and more since), because it appeared to just be about a stupid girl, but then grasped it is a sweet story about finding one's self and being able to realize your place in the world. - Also I love Brittany Murphy's slap-stick comedy - her facial expressions! - too perfect. Wish she could have stayed with us. And of course, all the rest of the cast is superb. Would like to see a version that includes the cut scenes which rounded out the supporting cast's roles and had a much better ending.

A favorite of mine due to the story--and please check out the extra deleted scenes for more info on the other characters. Fairly lightweight, yet I think it delves very well into the mind of a ditzy American girl in how she's sees Japanese culture. She manages to be respectful and watchful, but her failure to learn to speak adequate Japanese annoyed me. She ends up as a success because she finally sticks with something that truly interests her--almost felt like a past life remembrance for at some point she seems to understand the Japanese even without truly knowing much of the language, and takes so ardently to her learning process to be a Ramen Chef. Recommended for any Brittany Murphy fan, Japan lovers and ramen fans--good entertainment for an evening of popcorn and a fun flick.

I love this actress. This is her in one of her last movies before she passed. This movie is funny and entertaining. Great characters and great story line. If you love a little of Japanese culture, Ramen, woman's independence, comedy, then you will love this movie too!

I enjoy watching this movie because I love Japan. The neighborhood and shops look genuine, and I love that the Japanese speak Japanese with subtitles. It's not a complicated story, just a simple story with a bit of interesting background on Ramen. Brittany Murphy (RIP sweet lady) adds sweet charm. I've seen it twice and will watch it again when I want to see Japan!
