The Doctor goes back to 1851 London and finds Cybermen as well as another Doctor whose tardis is a balloon and whose companion is a young black woman named Rosita. Is this the Doctor from a future rejuvenation? The adventure was not bad, the events with the cyberking and the female human accomplice was interesting, if not predictable, I think something rather similar went down the Daleks merging with a human in that Daleks in Manhattan storyline. As I watched the appearance of the cyberking over London, I couldn't help but think back to State of Decay, the Tom Baker story with vampires and how no giant vampire rising up could be shown, due to the budget, so we were given a hazy computer image of the 'giant' then a hand breaking thru the ground. How times has changed. As another David Tennant episode, it works, but the pretense that it is a special and will be different from Tennant's regular run might make it fall below expectations.Read full review
Look, "The Next Doctor" is a fine Doctor Who yarn. Plot: The Doctor saves the world (or at least London) at Christmas. Got it? He has done it various times since the BBC rebooted the series and will probably do it again -- possibly as soon as the next Doctor Who Christmas Special. If you need more, check Wikipedia. Now the REAL reason to buy "The Next Doctor" is the DVD extra "Doctor Who at the Proms" (hosted by Freema Agyeman), an hour-long concert of Who-related music with visits by various "guests" (companions and enemies) that will tickle your synapses. Adding any more would just spoil it. This "extra" is with the price of admission all by itself!
I became a Whovian over the past 3 years, and I think anyone who loves Doctor Who would love this, no matter which Doctor they prefer.
