RS-485 is a very powerful industrial standard of communication which allows up to 256 meters to be connected on up to 4000 feet of wire to one communication converter.  We have USB to RS-485, Serial (RS-232) to RS-485, and Ethernet to RS-485 Converters available.  You must use one of these converters to read our meters with your computer or over the internet.  We have these converters available on eBay or on our website.  We supply a Free Version of our EKM Reader software that will allow you to read an unlimited number of meters within your building or over the internet.  We also have a paid version of our software ($30) available which will let you log your meter reads to a spreadsheet and generate and email monthly bills to your tenants or users.  Our software is compatible with PC, Mac OSX, and Linux.

Although the Ethernet to RS-485 converter is a bit more expensive, we highly recommend it. With your meters connected to this device, and the device connected to your LAN or router, you will be able to read your meters from anywhere from any computer, not just locally, but anywhere in the world!  If you want to see how this works, download and run the Free EKM Reader software on your computer. You will be able to read our test meters from your PC, Linux box, or Mac OSX. These meters are connected to the Ethernet to RS-485 converter at our test site.
