Confederate States of America - movie prop $1 bill ~ Reed type #CA-60a, $1, serial #82283 Clement C. Clay, large size, front is black and the back is very dark green on gray paper. Found on page 330 of Show Me the Money. This is a large (about 3 1/8 x 7 3/8) banknote. Very light wear, almost uncirculated. Based on Confederate design elements. Very nicely made! This is a genuine original.

This series of bills came from the Ellis Prop and Graphics house auction and have genuine film bonafides. Unfortunately, Ellis didn't keep track of the films in which these notes were used. We do know that these bills were used in a variety of Westerns and other period pieces. Keep a look-out while watching those old westerns.

The item (or items) in this lot are, to the best of my knowledge, genuine screen-used prop notes from major motion pictures. The illustration in my lot description is probably not the exact note you will be getting but it is of the same type and condition. Catalog numbers come from Fred Reed's excellent catalog Show Me the Money (McFarland, 2005), which you should have if you are serious about this hobby.

Graphics/Scans: I usually show both sides of the note unless one side is blank or both sides are the same. This does not mean you will be getting two notes unless the description states otherwise. My graphics are generally reduced 25% to 50% from the original.

Authenticity: In most cases, on request I can provide the buyer with a photocopy of the COA from the property house where these notes were acquired. I do not issue my own COAs because, lets face it, anyone with a computer and a laser printer can whip up a nice looking COA.

Movie Money or Prop Money is used on the stage and in motion pictures to simulate cash. We have all seen films where banknotes are burned, blown up, thrown to the winds or otherwise damaged and mishandled. Even Hollywood has to think twice about destroying real spendable banknotes.

Where do prop notes come from?

There are two broad sources for movie money (studios and property houses) and three types of movie money (film specific, studio specific, and generic prop house notes). As might be imagined, film specific notes (those designed for just one movie) are usually the most detailed and the hardest to get. Film specific notes often play an important role in the movie themselves and can be seen in screen close-ups. Studio issued notes are generally used in a variety of films or television productions all from the same studio, sometimes many years apart. Property house notes are issued by various suppliers of film props and rented to the major studios. They can be in anyone's films! Finally, in recent years, reproductions of some prop notes have been made commercially available to the collector's market.

Buy/Sell/Trade: I collect prop notes and all of the item I sell are duplicates from my own collection. I often do have more than one example of a specific note. If you have prop notes to trade, make your offer long before my item ends. I'll make you an offer and you can then bid accordingly. I will not end an auction early and deal outside the eBay system.

Images are generally reduced 50-80% of actual size. In most cases size dimensions are given, except when the size is a known standard (i.e. comics, pulps, magazines & tabloids).
