Hearken back to the glory days of the 1920s with the 1926-S 10C Mercury Dime. Minted in 1926 as part of the Mercury series, the dime is in very good condition. It was designed by Adolph A. Weinman, a renowned architectural sculptor with a diverse array of work attributed to him. As an item sought-after by collectors and teachers alike, this coin makes a fine addition to coin collections. It can be displayed proudly amongst other coins. It can also be used as a prop for teaching students. As a fascinating historical artifact, the 1926-S 10C Mercury Dime is a worthy acquisition. The 1926-S 10C Mercury Dime was designed by Weinman with the intention of representing the principles of the United States. As such, its features allude to freedom and self-determination. It became known as the “Mercury” dime when people misinterpreted the depiction of Lady Liberty on the front. Many believed that it was the Roman mythological figure Mercury, the messenger to the gods. This was due to Weinman’s intricate addition of wings to the Liberty head. The name continued to stick throughout the years despite the creator’s attempts at dissuasion. The dimes were minted by the famed San Francisco Mint, which was constructed during the California Gold Rush. Due to a low mintage rate, this version of the Mercury Dime issue is quite rare. Only 1,520,000 units were distributed. Once worth 10 cents, the series ran from the years 1916 to 1945. The scarcity of the Mercury Dime now makes it a valuable item in any grading for a coin collector. 1926-S Mercury coins are comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper. It has a weight of 2.5 grams and measures 17.9 millimeters in diameter. With a reeded edge, the Mercury coins are pleasantly tactile, and they have a well-rounded appearance. The coin has a designated fineness of 0.9000. Due to its high silver content, the coin can be melted down for some value from the metal. However, the bullion values far more as a collector’s item. On the obverse of the coin, the word “Liberty” is displayed in capitalized letters in a semicircular arrangement. The iconic and noble Lady Liberty is intricately portrayed on the frontal engraving. She looks to the left with a look of resolute determination. She sports Weinman’s unique addition of wings on her flowing hair, giving her a Roman appearance. To the left of the winged figure, “In God We Trust” is written. This is accompanied by the circulation date of 1926 on the right. On the reverse of the silver coins, “United States of America” has another semicircular arrangement adjacent to the edge. Separated by stars from these words, the denomination of “One Dime” is written at the bottom. The center of the reverse is dominated by the depiction of fasces, which is Latin for “bundle”. It’s a bundle of sticks that has an ax protruding from the top. The symbol has roots in Ancient Roman culture. Weinman chose this to represent the sentiment of strength through unity, alluding to a U.S. made strong by a united front. Next to the bundle, the familiar phrase “E Pluribus Unum” (out of many, one) features as well on the dimes. The mint mark of “S” is nestled below the bundle to represent the coin’s origin in the San Francisco Mint.
