Johnny Depp and Tim Burton team up again in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - a hilarious and wildly visual remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Just like any other Tim Burton movie, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is fantastic to watch - great color, production and direction. And just like any other Johnny Depp movie, its very well acted. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton got rave reviews for the movie which drove strong box office success nationally and abroad. Kids and parents alike will enjoy the movie - for different reasons. Either way, its a very fun and different twist on a classic movie... and I'm always up for a Depp / Burton combination: "Wondrous....Charlie and the Chocolate Factory moves, like Dahl's original, in a straight line from one inspired set piece to the next..." New York Times - A. O. Scott (07/15/2005) "Tim Burton surrounds Depp with miraculous visuals of spun sugar and creeping menace. Their missionary lunacy is a treat for twisted children of all ages." Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (07/28/2005) "Depp deserves kudos for fashioning an original and outlandish if occasionally menacing character in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY....[The film is] a marvel of rich, colorful design and flair." USA Today - Claudia Puig (07/15/2005) Charlie & The Chocolate Factory Cast Johnny Depp .... Willy Wonka Freddie Highmore .... Charlie Bucket David Kelly .... Grandpa Joe Helena Bonham Carter .... I don't care. Violet Beauregarde: Well, you should care because I'm the girl who's gonna win the special prize at the end. Willy Wonka: Well, you do seem confident and confidence is key. Veruca Salt: I'm Veruca Salt. It's very nice to meet you, sir. [does a curtsy] Willy Wonka: I always thought a verruca was a type of wart you got on the bottom of your foot. Ha. Augustus Gloop: [Augustus steps in front of Veruca] I'm Augustus Gloop. I love your chocolate. Willy Wonka: I can see that. So do I. I never expected to have so much in common. [Wonka stops and turns around to Mike] Willy Wonka: You, you're Mike Teavee. You're the little devil who cracked the system. [looks at Charlie] Willy Wonka: And you, you're just lucky to be here, aren't you?Read full review
I had to see this movie as I am a great fan of Johnny Depp's. While I didn't overly care for the storyline - frankly once was enough in the first with Gene Wilder, I thought that Johnny's performance brought new "life" into a movie that had an already eccentric main character - Gene Wilder/Willie Wonka. The movie pretty much followed the same storyline as the original but with more CG effects which seems to be the norm with movies nowadays..Sometimes this is good and sometimes this taints the movie a bit. I bought it to add to my collection but will be awhile before I pull it out to watch it for it's content.
I love this movie because the premise is that spoiled kids are really losers and Johnny Depp makes fun of them brilliantly! Great music, fun special effects, and a sweet story of the luckiest boy in the world. Johnny Depp brings Willy Wonka's character out in a peculiar and unique way combining hilarious self-deprecating jokes and through no-nonsense mocking of the spoiled children. Each kid character represents a unique spoiled trait. The Atlanta kid is my favorite with the British kid close behind! The movie gets into Willie Wonka's background more than the book did, telling how he got to be the great Willy Wonka as you learn about his dentist father. A must see for parents and kids alike. I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old and they both love the movie... we talk about it a lot!Read full review
Great Tim Burton re-make of the Gene Wilder original. It has the same dark comedy story line with a different twist given by Johnny Depp. I loved the original & I like this version very much with the different style that Tim Burton has created. Usually re-makes of a movie aren't as pleasing or shocking as the original but on occasion a movie comes along & beats the odds. This one has done that & the only loss is the element of surprise. I love movies that entertain me even if they are not realistic. D. Kleiman
After adoring Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean and Don Juan deMarco, I thought I'd give this one a try. I have never laughed so hard in my life. He is absolutely brilliant in this role. I never saw the original movie and have no desire to now that I've seen this one and loved it so much. If you're a Johnny Depp fan you HAVE to see this movie.
