Top-Graded Pedigree Copy
THE SINGLE BEST COPY OF CHALL'S #24, WHICH IS JUST THE SECOND ISSUE WITH A 12-CENT COVER, AS #22 WAS STILL AN OLD TEN-CENTER!
This super-bright clean comic-book was strictly graded by CGC and boasts phenomenal eye appeal.
This heralds from the newly discovered MOUND CITY PEDIGREE, from St. Louis, MO, and includes the Certificate Of Authenticity. Only one other copy has ever certified above 9.0, and it was submitted in late 2000, and is an old-label 9.2 with mere Cream to Off-White pages, while this unmatched copy boasts gleaming Off-White to White paper!
TOUGH TO GET ABOVE VERY FINE, NOT TO MENTION THE HEAVY GLOSS THAT THIS BEAUTY RETAINS!
THIS SUPERLATIVE EXAMPLE WAS PART OF AN AWESOME ORIGINAL-OWNER COLLECTION THAT REALLY SHATTERED RECORDS AND ROCKED THE COMICS INDUSTRY THIS YEAR, WHEN IT WAS AUCTIONED BY MOUND CITY AUCTIONS IN MO LATELY. TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF THE QUALITY OF THESE BOOKS, THE X-MEN #1 AND AVENGERS #1 FROM THIS NEW PEDIGREE BOTH GRADED AT NM 9.4 (AND COMMANDED $106,050 AND $65,100 RESPECTIVELY) AND THE MOUND CITY COPY OF GREEN LANTERN #1, IN THE SAME 9.2 SHAPE AS THIS GEM, BROKE $30K! THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO GET AN UNSURPASSED MOUND CITY SPECIMEN FOR A REASONABLE RATE.
THE CHALLENGERS COMBINE THE POPULAR SUPERHERO GENRE WITH THE CULT-CLASSIC SCIENCE-FICTION SETTINGS AND WILD SPACE-THEMED FARE, AND THE ISSUES WITH THE COLORFUL MULTI-MAN SUPERVILLAIN ARE AMONG THE MOST BELOVED.
STUNNING BLOOD RED LOGO, WITH AN AWESOME COVER SHOWING MULTI-MAN THREATENING TO DOOM THE EARTH!
THIS ALSO FEATURES THE "CHALLENGERS DIE AT DAWN" STORY!
This long running silver-age series is tough to get in the upper grades, and no copy has ever certified this favorably, until this newly-discovered Pedigree turned up.
Here is what the press release stated, introducing this historic find to the market: "Every comic in the collection came from one original owner, who had them stored for 35+ years in boxes underneath a staircase in a basement in St. Louis. He had no idea about their value, he just loved comics. He passed away, leaving his collection to his mother, who followed suit about one year later, leaving the contents of her house, including the books, to her nephew, who then contacted us to liquidate the estate. The man who bought the books as a child, bought a large amount of the collection from a local barber shop in St. Louis. The books were as raw as a collection can be. Not only are all of the books in their original state, with none restored or pressed, they were not even stored in bags and boards, instead they were stacked with their spines alternating in boxes for the better part of the past four decades, forgotten,” he said.
"He said he believes the top five lots are (Lot # 868) Amazing Fantasy #15 graded 8.0, (Lot # 169) Showcase #22 graded 8.0, (Lot # 203), Avengers #1 graded 9.4, (Lot 294) X-Men #1 graded 9.4, and (Lot #113) Journey Into Mystery #83 graded 8.0".
“This is one of the most significant collections of comic books to be brought to market in decades. It is a single owner collection that has never been restored in any way,”.
The grey background of the cover provides great contrasts and is a treat to behold when it's unblemished by such pesky detractors as soiling or other obvious creases and spine-stresses. These old DC Comics just keep getting hotter... It doesn't get much more "Blue Chip" than this!
Each item is securely-boxed, with plenty of protective packaging material.
This incredible original first-print comic-book WILL find a new home, as the asking price is LOW and there is NO RESERVE!
ALWAYS POPULAR, BUT INCREASINGLY RARE, UNRESTORED HIGH-GRADE SPECIMENS OF THIS OLD COMIC ARE ONLY GETTING HOTTER!
This historic comic is a real find in unrestored VF or better shape, as most copies had production flaws such as printing creases or scuffs or distributor ink, while others were read and re-read, time and time again, and with the glossy grey cover even the tiniest flaws seem magnified. However, this copy is spectacular, as it's lustrous and clean and there is no distracting major wear or obvious aging, and it has precise printing registration. And the gloss is excellent, too! This crushes most of the "Near Mint" old comics I purchased over the decades back in the pre-CGC era. Good luck finding this level of eye appeal again in the future, as this beauty boasts deep rich uniform colors and a flat clean appearance, devoid of common problems such as print-creases and and chips, and the deep gloss and great centering are a bonus. The lines, scuffs, and hazy areas you see below are from the scanner glass, not the slab or comic, plus there are refections and glare, all of which is not evident when viewing the actual book in person. (Our scanner makes it appear as if there are vertical lines running up through the right half of the item, but there are no such light lines, and no scratches on the fresh new CGC holder, either.)
We are also now auctioning other nice CGC vintage comics, plus rare comic art; And we'll be offering hundreds of other collectable comics in the next few months. Check out our ebay items regularly!
A lot has happened with the DC heroes in the almost half-century since this gem came out, adding more allure to the fabled vintage issues such as this; so I don't suggest waiting around until these crucial books have gone through the roof.... High-grade specimens of this hot issue are always in demand, but are not always available in the market, especially in such well-preserved condition with incredible luster and deep colors like this!
This is a beauty that you can show and display proudly, without worrying about damage or degradation of the nice supple clean bone-white paper, thanks to the benefit of professional Comic Guaranty Corporation encapsulation. With demand that exceeds supply, premium prices often occur when a certified beauty such as this reaches the market.
Great cover colors; And the gloss is phenomenal, which must be seen in person to be appreciated. If you are a discriminating collector, serious CGC-graded comics investor, or just a devout silver-age DC collector and prefer unrestored books without significant flaws, then NOW is your brief window of opportunity. It looks less appealing in the disappointing picture, with lots of glare and lines from our scanner, ~but in person the book looks spectacular and the super bright colors really leap out at you!
The extremely conservative Overall CGC Universal Grade is NEAR MINT-; --it looks virtually new from outside the clear plastic CGC case!
This extra bright clean copy sports the Blue Unrestored CGC Label; --And the CGC case is unblemished, with no scuffs or cracks.
