Carver C-4000 Preamplifier with Autocorrelator, Peak Unlimiter, Sonic Holography

Carver C-4000 Preamplifier with Autocorrelator, Peak Unlimiter, Sonic Holography; serial #001015 (15th unit produced from first production run).  This unit was a lineal descendent of Bob Carver's Phase Linear 4000 preamplifier; when he sold Phase Linear to Pioneer at the end of 1978, he kept all of his patents for use in future products.  About a year and a half later he introduced the Carver brand; this, along with a few power amplifiers, was the first product.  He updated the "4000" circuitry, adding sonic holography (a sample-and-selectively-delay circuit), which added a reverberative effect; this can be set to affect only the area directly in front of the speakers or, if desired, off-axis listeners as well.  He retained the noise-reducing autocorrelator circuit and the peak unlimiter (which detected compression in the recording and expanded by a like amount) from the original Phase Linear unit -- but he added another feature never included in previous products -- a small (18 watts/channel) 3-channel (left/center/right) power amplifier fed by a selectable time delay for use with additional speakers to be arrayed around the listening area -- to be used to augment the sonic holography effect.  Besides all these features, the Carver C-4000 is a very versatile preamplifier in its own right; it has two moving-magnet phono inputs, one of which has adjustable capacitive loading, a processor loop, and twin tape loops.  Finally -- if the user wanted to use a different power amplifier for delayed speakers -- and were willing to omit the center output -- a line-level left & right output is available to feed another amplifier for left & right delayed speakers.  Bob Carver essentially worked enough versatility into this preamplifier to address just about any single-room listening situation he could imagine!  This particular unit is from the initial production run circa late 1979 or early 1980; our technician thoroughly tested this unit, replacing virtually all small electrolytic capacitors on all of the circuit boards (see picture of bagged replaced caps -- small electrolytics generally have a usage life of 20-25 years before drying out), cleaning/deoxidizing all controls, and making sure that all the functions are working properly.  This is a completely refurbished unit -- ready to function as if it just emerged from the factory.  To Bob Carver's credit, when other U.S. manufacturers were moving offshore, he elected to maintain production of his premier products here in the U.S. (suburban Seattle area, to be specific).  The unit is finished in silver and gray, and measures 19" wide, 10.5" deep, and 7" high.  We're setting a low opening price on this fine example of American technology at its best -- so if you would like to make use of the special features included in this unit -- or just want a great-performing preamplifer for your system, this just may be the time to make that purchase!   Cat not included!

    In regards to the term "refurbished", we take it to mean that the unit was restored to original factory specifications; depending upon the condition of the unit when we get it, that can entail several things: replacement of any and all electrolytic capacitors that have "dried out" or otherwise display substandard ESR, replacement of ceramic capacitors in the signal path with silver-mica or film units of the same value, replacement of any burnt-out light bulbs, and re-soldering of any questionable joints. Minimally, it would mean full cleaning inside & out, including all switches, pots, and contacts.
