A Rare Find! This is the original medal issued by the U.S. Treasury Department in honor of Carole Lombard's patriotic service. The medal was awarded to her late husband Clark Gable in 1946 along with the letter of gratitude for her efforts in raising over Two Million Dollars in War Bonds. Carole Lombard died along with her mother, her publicist and 19 others on board that returning flight from this war rally held in her home of Indiana. President Roosevelt declared her the first woman in the United States to die in war while serving her country.
This is a remarkable piece of forgotten history that I found stached away in one of my boxes placed up in the attic some fifteen years ago. It has been difficult to find information regarding this award which I find baffling given the historical value it holds. I have come to the conclusion that few if any are aware of its existence. Most definitely one of a kind historical collectible to anyone who admired Carole Lombard and Clark Gable! |
