While I was a big fan of the Battlestar Gallactica Series in all its recent incarnations, and really liked the interaction of the characters and the way the plot line moved forward, Caprica, set 58 years before those climactic events, is way too slow paced and not nearly as dramatically appealing. The characters and the setting are designed to give some indication of how the events in Battlestar came to such a decisive head, but the writers are too intent on their purpose and neglect the fact that viewers want to be engrossed in the unfolding of events, not just filled in slowly, so slowly, about what caused the conflict that they really care about. Nearly everyone has something hidden in Caprica, and technology is fast evolving, with true artificial life seeming to be just on the horizon, and when the character played by Eric Stotlz faces an emotional decision of what to do when his daughter dies, he places her consciousness into a new robot body prototype. However, she won't reveal to him that she is his daughter and he thinks the consciousnes has gone forever. Zoe, the daughter in the robot body, begins to fall for her technician/caretaker, which could set up an interesting conflict, but it develops sooooo slowly that viewers lose interest. The switching between characters that worked in Battlestar is used again here, an attempt to recapture the magic that made the former series one of the best on TV. Caprica will never be able to live up to that, and instead of trying, they should have sought their own direction. Instead, this is, well, not really an imitation, but more a shadow of the other series. It's always difficult doing a prequel because the plot line has to eventually meet up with the beginning of the main series. In this case, that plotting to achieve the matchup results in boredom and loss of interest while waiting for the main plot lines to be revealed. Altogether a substandard effort by the team that excelled so well previously.Read full review
Strange how an old series from the, not so distant, past can gain new relevance. With the current concern over A.I. and societal impact. This show still imparts a great story line with a stellar cast.
