|California US 66 route marker.
Up for sale today is this California US 66 route sign. Made to the exact standards as used between 1928 and 1934 along this famous road.
Route 66 needs no introduction - it's been the historic Mother Road, from John Steinbeck to Bobby Troup, and has arguably become even more famous since its formal decommissioning between 1964 and 1985. 66 has become the ultimate lost highway, the road trip that everyone takes...
"Get your kicks, on route 66!" - Bobby Troup
An original of these, complete with the blue logo of the Auto Club of Southern California, would cost many thousands of dollars if it ever came to the market. I've only seen one blue-logo US-66 sign, and let me tell you, it doesn't look a quarter as nice as this one! So here is your chance to own an excellent display piece, for just a fraction of the price.
As are the originals, this sign is porcelain on steel, made to the highest standards of quality. 16 1/4 by 15 3/4 inches, and weighs four pounds and six ounces. It's a heavy one all right! This sign style was the first ever US route marker ever posted in California, between 1928 and 1934. Only the first six years of production got the distinct and ornate blue logo, and maybe only about five or six of the blue-logo style of signs survive to the present day. A 101, a 99, two 80s, a 66, and that's really about it that I can recall.
Here is the back of the sign. To protect the investments of those who have the genuine article (complete with bullet holes and friends), the back of this one is the same color white as the front, as opposed to the mottled gray design that immediately sets apart the originals.
Of course, when you've got this one bolted to your garage wall - who's going to look at the back?
Know your signs: this is the genuine article...
As is this one. Why pay thousands of dollars for something the cat dragged in?
This shiny new example can be yours for just 99 bucks! I've just run off a good quantity of these, which is why I can offer these at such a world-beating low price. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
"Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino..." - Bobby Troup

I can of course make these signs with any route number of your choice, and not just this style, but others with the reflectors, the embossed style that other states used, and even the classic mileage, direction, and city limit guide signs from the era. Anything you would like, made with unsurpassed quality right here in the good old US of A.

Figure about 7 pounds for shipping, mailed from zip code 92126. California customers, I'm afraid I'm going to have to charge death and taxes. Well, one of those, alas.
Paypal is a payment option, and there are others out there ...
I will be at the Bakersfield swap meet in early December. See you there!
