This horn is said to be made for Conn Selmer by UMI (United Musical Instruments), and it is Conn's last horn with rolled tone holes! The original list price was $1,435.50 so it is considered to be in the 'intermediate' horn price range, but that has nothing to do with how this horn plays. With its rolled tone holes, it can compete with ANY horn designated as professional, hands down!
The play-test was done with the Vito Paris Melodia 2V mouthpiece and a Vandoren Java Red 3 reed; the horn has all of the tonal complexity that you will need for any venue. In the hands of a good player, you can burn! I ran through the passages rather easily, and the ergonomics are 'modern' so you can get used to it in a few days... I was able to get a vintage tone in all of the registers, so this is a good rolled tone holes jazz horn, for sure!
The original lacquer is about 80%+ intact, but the real value of this horn is its uncanny playability... I am including both the Vito Paris Melodia with a Vandoren Java Red 3 and the Conn Precision with a Vandoren ZZ Jazz 3, because each of them has a different, but great, tone. Note: the middle latch on the original case is missing, but the case still works. More to come.
