This is a large, double page antique engineering engraving titled "Compound Three Cylinder Engines of the Steamship Orient. Messrs. John Elder and Co. , Glasgow, Engineers."   The engraving is in excellent condition and was published in a British engineering journal on October 3,  1879. The engraving, made from a photograph, shows a finely detailed view of the huge steam engines which powered the ship. The engraving is accompanied by the original article which describes the ship and its design in great detail.

The Orient was built by John Elder & Co., Glasgow in 1879 (5,386 tons). Operated by the Orient Steam Navigation Co. (Orient Line) on the UK-Australia route. In November 1879 Orient's maiden voyage was between London and Melbourne via the Suez Canal. During the Boer War, Orient was used as a troopship and her last voyage took place in 1909. This model was commissioned by the owner and exhibited at the 1880-81 Melbourne International Exhibition and was subsequently donated to the Museum by the Orient Line.

The overall size is approx. 21 by 15 inches. It is blank on the reverse side. This is not a modern reproduction or reprint. It is a vintage engraving, over 130 years old and guaranteed to be as described.
