A very entertaining movie if you like your humor on the crude and vulgar side. They simply copied what the late great Andy Kauffman invented and performed back in the 1970's, the innocent, naieve and "backwards" foreigner in America routine. The difference being is Kauffman did it with class and Borat does it with vulgarity and with a different accent. They mix the Borat character with un-suspecting American citizens and made a movie and a story out of this. The Borat character travels across the United States in an effort to learn our culture to better his country and to seek out his new found love, Pamela Anderson. He falls in love with Anderson after watching a re-run episode of "Bay Watch" in his hotel room. Anderson makes a cameo appearance toward the end of the movie. The nude fight scene between Borat and his male manager/producer has to be seen to be believed and is probably worth the purchase or rental of this DVD alone. This movie does experience some slow and flat moments. NOTE: The Borat character is anti-Jewish and holds a sexist attitude against women. He makes light of his wife's death, incest, rape, and only views women for sex and as slaves. It also contains sexual, political, religious, and "bathroom" humor that others may find offensive or up-setting. In short it has something in it that will offend most everyone, you have to have an open mind for this movie. Use your discretion. ***Definitely NOT a movie for the kids.***Read full review
If your sense of humor runs off the edge now and then, you will laugh until you cry at this movie. Similiar to laughing when you know you shouldn't, you will see scenes that are so bizarre you will have to laugh. The basic premise of this movie was that a man, from eastern Europe, wants to make a documentay about the American culture. The people in this movie were led to believe that they were in a documentary that would only be played in the directors country. Using the guise of being a foreigner and lacking skill in English, he asks questions and does things that would be totally unacceptable except that his unknowing actors are trying to be polite to the crude references he makes. Apparently, there were many people ticked off that they were taken advantage of. He made the comment at the S.A.G awards that he had not been with such a big crowd that was not sueing him for a while. If Monty Python makes you laugh or if you watched Jackass the movie( when you know you should not) this movie is worth a look. KSRead full review
Quite often a movies success is dictated by the era it was released. This movie is no exception. I'm currently on the fence with Borat. On one hand it has it's genius moments and really does get you laughing. On the other, I realized that this movie is completely making fun of me and my country, the USA. And right now, in a post 9/11 world my sense of humor is wearing thin on the subject. Seems that everyone is getting their kicks in while a country is down, even by some of our own ungreatful citizens. Had this movie come out before 9/11 I'd be able to laugh without a second thought. But it bothers me that the whole film was edited to make Americans look like nothing more than uptight blue bloods, ignorant rednecks and criminal minorities. Not once did it ever show a good side. But it doesn't take an over paid movie critic to figure out that's exactly what they're going for. Oddly enough I didn't hate this movie. I should, but I don't. As much as I didn't care for the subject matter, it was still funny. I'm actually more surprised that people were just upset by the nudity. The Borat character was very likable. I can't get enough of his silly catch phrases. But deep down, behind the laughter I'm really sad...because this is how other countries really see America. We're the bad guys until someone needs our help. Damned if we do, damned if we don't.Read full review
This movie gets laughs based on the shock factor. I spent a good portion of the viewing time with my eyes- and mouth- wide open in total disbelief. It is a not-for-the-kids comedy that depicts a man behaving as I'm sure a lot of us might- if double-dared. Borat does and says things that most everyone has wanted to at some point or other, but never would in a million years because of "society" and legal ramifications. This movie is hillllarious, if you like crude and offensive humor and seeing people in unbelievable situations. I personally liked it, and found it refreshing that someone would have the audacity to make such a movie- give it a view and see what you think!
Borat is, at times, ridiculously funny. There are some lulls in the action, some things that make the viewer very uncomfortable, and some things that are just plain wrong (e.g. male nude wrestling), but all in all the movie is a wonderful distraction from everyday life. I'm sure you all know the premise: Borat is a Khazikstani journalist sent to the U.S. to bring back the American way of life for his people. In the process, he gets a restraining order from Pamela Anderson, learns to dress from some homeys, nearly gets lynched for singing the wrong anthem at a rodeo, and shows off his package at every instance possible. If you've seen the television show, then you'll know Borat is a bit hard on the Jews. And women. Well, he manages to piss off most uptight people, regardless of gender or religious view, so I guess I don't need to point that out. Just be warned: he doesn't pull punches, so if you're easily offended by something - anything at all - you may wish to reconsider viewing this film. If you're not uptight and stuck on yourself, this film is great fun. It's refreshing to be able to laugh at things you're not normally allowed to laugh at in this overly PC touchy-feely-fest we call a country. Borat may take things a little far, but that's half the fun, wondering if he's going to cross some invisible line into extreme bad taste (most of the movie is in moderate bad taste). Highly recommended!Read full review
