Born too late to enjoy the glamour of riding the Texas range of the Old West, Clint Peoples became the pattern for many modern Rangers today, employing modern techniques and strategies to fight Texas' worst outlaws during the 1940's and 50's This is an extremely thorough account of the inspiring life and law enforcement career of Captain Clint Peoples, one of only a few Texas Rangers to have served as a county deputy, a Highway Patrolman, working his way up through the Texas Department of Public Safety to Texas Ranger captain and finally appointed as a U. S. Marshal. Obscure personal stories of Peoples growing up in Montgomery County among lumberjacks and roughnecks help explain his grit and cunning nature which made him a dogged investigator, undercover agent, and a popular leader while serving in the Texas Rangers. The book includes many criminal cases in which he was involved, including some of the ones that did not work out in his favor. The humility and candor of the book makes the whole account more interesting and perhaps reveals the difficulty and frustration of serving as a Texas peace officer, making his accomplishments that much more impressive. It was Peoples who dared to enter the belly of the beast in 1940's Galveston to bust up the illegal underworld gambling rings there. A favorite of the Governor and Homer Garrison the Ranger Commander, it was Peoples who became the captain of Ranger Company F in Waco, at the new headquarters, and who helped usher in a new era of public relations for the Texas Rangers by overseeing the creation of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. Anyone interested in modern Texas Rangers will consider this a treasure trove of authentic Ranger lore.Read full review
