About the Artist
Abbey Ryan's painting work has been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine's "Live Your Best Life—Women Who Make Beautiful Things" section of the February 2011 issue on creativity, Seth Godin's recent bestseller, Linchpin: Are You Indispensible?, Good Day Philadelphia, and posts about her work on BoingBoing. Through her blog, Abbey's work is in over six hundred private and public collections all over the world including Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, England, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Chile. Abbey credits her painting style to her teacher, David A. Leffel, at the Art Students League of NY.
Abbey’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe. Recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition at the Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia; Affinity, a four-person exhibition at Mt. Airy Contemporary Artists Space, Philadelphia; and group exhibitions at 110 Church Gallery and The Painted Bride Gallery in Philadelphia, Elliott Fouts Gallery in Sacramento, Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia, and Gleason Fine Art in Portland, Maine.
Abbey was born and raised in New Jersey, USA. She completed undergraduate work in both science and art at Arcadia University and post-graduate work at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Art Students League of New York, and Hunter College/CUNY. As a student, Abbey traveled to the North Pacific to Pohnpei, Micronesia to do volunteer work at the Marine and Environmental Research Institute of Pohnpei and Pohnpei Agriculture and Trade School. She also worked as a scientific illustrator at the Carnegie Institute of Washington, Department of Plant Biology at Stanford University.
Abbey lives and works in Philadelphia. She teaches professional painting workshops nationally, as well as studio art at Arcadia University.
