As a high school senior English teacher, I have two things to say about using this movie. First, you'll need to edit in about 25 places with regard to sexual content and foul language--I did it while moving from DVD to a VHS. The gore though is generally acceptable to parents--especially considering the time period this covers--so it's not really an issue. The second thing involves how this really brings complexity to the otherwise simplistic and too-straightforward Beowulf story. It questions why Beowulf has to kill Grendel, what are Grendel's motives (other than just being a descendant of Cain), etc. It gets complicated and Beowulf doesn't come out smelling like roses--and Hrothgar is just a drunken jerk. So while there is a realistic mead hall and the landscape is nice and bleak (though there's no dragon story) It's definitely worth using in the classroom. Highly worth bringing the extra dimension into the classroom for some seriously cool discussions and insights into themes involving revenge, justice, mercy and loyalty.Read full review
We had orginally purchased the other "Beowulf" film thinking it was this one..since it was computer animated we were not interested in seeing it..then we found this one..saying it is dark is an understatement..filled with gore and violence this is not a film for children..and should only be watched by mature teens..I had to get up a few times and leave the room to get through the film and will not be watching it again..the script was soo off especially the language...come on those words were more then likely not even around during that time period, the use of the f word was everywhere and the word p***k oh please!..the acting wasn't that great..I was really disappointed with the fight scenes..I guess "Xena Warrior Princess" spoiled me I love realistic sword fight scenes and some of the fight scenes in this film are really badly done..even the sword twirling looks fake..there are some laughable scenes I love the rock throwing scene, but the scene that made me first laugh then shake my head was the practice fight scene between two characters, the main character Beowulf and an extra (at least I tihnk he was an extra alot of these characters were very forgettable) the extra pretended to stumble, but you could tell a mile away he faked his stumble the way he fell was pathetic..don't bother with this film while it can be engaging at times and does end the right way imho this movie is a waste of time and money..we certainly wasted our $5!Read full review
This movie was very entertaining. It is EXTREMELY well acted, and perfectly set in its time period. The problem is that it take leaps and bounds worth of liberties from the original Beowulf. While this may not be a problem for some, but I LOVED Beowulf when studying it, and it really erks me to see a classic twisted for the silver screen. Bottom Line - Good entertaining movie, but don't expected to flow along with the original Beowulf epic poem. I hope this review was helpful. Either way, please vote below. Thanks.
I have been researching the story of Beowulf for sometime now and purchased this product in hope that it may be as good as the poem itself. I have to say that although this film does not follow the poem in exact detail, the film is just as entertaining and is very realistic in the approach to the "troll" Grendel. Most other Beowulf films show Grendel as a gigantic monster of sorts while this film shows Grendel as a "wild-man" who has been wronged by a greedy and arrogan King in his youth. This is why the film is ccalled "Beowulf and Grendel" and not simply "Beowulf." After watching this movie several times now, I find that I can't get sick of it. I recommend this to anybody interested in literature, history, ancient cultures, or just the average guy who is looking for something differant to pop in and watch.Read full review
This film, while it includes some supernatural elements, stays closer to the classic tale and brings a more "realistic" version to us, less outrageously fantastic and a bit more down to earth. I especially liked the scenery and setting, which looks more like the grimy frigid coasts of the Danes than some lush mid-European paradise. There is even a scene of Beowulf's longboat going through glacial waters. Worth it, check it out!
