This is a Beautiful Antique / Vintage Wooden Sewing Box.
The box has faux finish to enhance the beauty of the piece and accentuate the appearance of age. The top has two wide diagonal lines of painted or stenciled black and gold to further enhance the appearance. The very last photo in the lower photo group shows the unfinished bottom of the box. Comparing this to the top photo, you can see the enhanced beauty of the applied finish very clearly.
The box has overall maximum dimensions of 10 3/8" wide x 7 1/2" deep x 3 1/2" tall. The top has a beveled edge as seen.
The box has a lock, but as found there is no key and possibly an escutcheon is missing as well.
The inside has beautifully finished compartments including:
- A red velvet pin cushion at each of the two back corners
- A rectangular, open storage section in front of each pin cushion
- A covered storage section at the front center
- A removeable revolving thread spool holder at the back center. As found, there was one spool of thread. It appears the it may be a bit larger than the size originally intended for use.
- A mirror in the lid
The top photo is a composite. The upper half shows the outside top and front of the box. The lower half shows the inside. Please note that in the latter, I overlooked a loose black thread laying on the spool caddy when I took the photo.
Since we do not know specifically when box was made, I do not know for sure if the box is in the correct sewing category or not.
This wonderful old sewing box would be a great addition to a collection, a nice choice for your one and only sewing box, or a very special gift.
At the time of the original listing, this was one of two sewing boxes, purchased and listed separately, being listed over a period of a couple of days.
Regarding shipping: For US buyers, the less expensive rate between the 4 pound 8 ounce Priority Mail variable rate and the Priority Mail medium flat rate will vary based on your distance from the Seattle area. If you win the auction and decide to pay immediately, please be sure to choose the lesser of the two rates that you will see in the shipping tab and in the invoice that ebay will automatically send to you.
The box is structurally in very good condition. The finish is in quite nice condition with some minor scuffs and edge wear and some minor scuffs and missing paint on the gold and black stripes.
I do not see any obvious problems with the lock. Without a key (already noted as missing) I do not know if the lock works or not. The hinges are in good condition with just a little "play"
The mirror inside the lid does NOT actually appear to be a mirror. It is a very, very thin material with the appearance of a mirror, that appears to have been glued directly to the wood behind. It is viewed through a rectangular opening cut in the fairly heavy paperstock or fiberboard panel that lines the lid. The "mirror" is in very poor condition as seen. On the left side, there is a large area missing, exposing the wood inside the lid. There is chipping and flaking of this wafer thin material in quite a number of places as seen. What appear to be a "crack" running from top to bottom is simply another scrape through this thin material, just like the rest of the damage. If you want to refurbish this piece, I think the appropriate fix would to be simply have a small single pane piece of mirror cut at a glass shop and then fasten it into place over the damaged surface.
There are a couple of light, black lines on the velvet on the left pin cushion, and a little very minor overall wear on the velvet on both pin cushions.
There is some minor paint loss on the black wooden know used to both turn and remove the rotating spool holder. The spool holder can rotate but it does not spin freely. I think loosening the screw on the bottom, adding a couple of drops of light household utility oil, and retightening might improve the motion but I do not know for sure.
