NO RESERVE AUCTION!!!
This NO RESERVE auction is for a heavily embellished Bambara ceremonial wand. Denizens of southern and western Mali, the Bambara, or Bamana, people are a very large ethnic group, consisting of roughly 2.5 million people. Their territory is bisected by the Niger river, and despite their largely arid homeland, they are a mostly agrarian people, producing corn, millet, and other crops, basing their local economies, for the most part, on subsistence farming. With a number of secret societies, each producing numerous and noteworthy forms of artwork, the Bambara have become well known among African art collectors, primarily for their N'tomo masks and Chi Wara headdresses. These are, however, by no means their only prominent or noteworthy forms of art.
This large and elaborate ceremonial wand features a number of embellishments, from cloth to metal rings to fine, relatively large antiquated African trade beads. This piece was likely part of a larger ceremonial wand set, and was at some point separated from its kin. As it stands, this single wand is quite large, and would be the type used to wedding, prestige, or other social ceremonies within a Bambara community. The piece has numerous strands of large, antique trade beads suspended from it, as well as metal rings hanging from the noses on the faces of both sides of the wand. A single well-worn seashell is also suspended in one area on the piece. Hand died blood red cloth is tied to multiple areas on the piece as well, and numerous signs of use and age are present on this piece, including stains on the cloth, surface wear, rubbing on the joint at the base of the wand, corrosion on the metal elements. This piece is reasonably large, and not something we frequently come across, so take this rare opportunity to own one of these fine examples of Bambara art!
Dimensions are 22" tall x 8" x 6.5". It weighs in at two and a half pounds.
MEDIUM: Wood, Fiber, Beads, Cloth, Metal
