Balzers Union Sputtering Device Type 07 120B
For sale- a Balzers Union Sputtering Device. Says so right there on the Operating Instruction manual that is included. And the back label says it is a Type 07 120B if that tells you anything. So basically a sputter coating system in very good physical condition. Functionally I have no idea. When you press the power button there is no indication that the instrument is on, but when you press the Pump button that lights up (the flash washed it out in the original set of pictures so I took a few more where you can see that it is on) and the vacuum gauge registers. So maybe the Power indicator light is burned out or maybe it has a vacuum interlock that keeps it from energizing until a suitable vacuum is achieved. Beyond that it is untested and no warranty is offered.
However, if you pay the asking price and find it has a problem you cannot live with within seven days of receipt you may return it. Returns are ONLY allowed on Buy It Now Purchases. Accepted Best Offers are strictly an as is sale, no returns allowed. Return would be for a refund of the purchase price, not including shipping costs. Let me be clear on how this works. If you get it and it isn’t functional without a little work you may either return it for a refund (if you paid the Buy It Now price) or you may keep it and repair it at your own expense. You may NOT keep it and ask me to pay for the repairs. I think you would be wise to budget for some repairs and then hopefully be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t need any.
A couple of things to note. First, this thing is set up for 220VAC even though it has a standard modular computer-type AC cord socket. I will be happy to include a regular 110 AC cord if you request one, but I don’t see any point in putting a 220 plug on it because there are so many flavors of 220 sockets, and I have no idea what you might be plugging it into. For ten bucks I will make up a cord with your choice of plugs, which basically covers my cost of buying the plug at Lowe’s. If you don’t already have a 220 socket handy it would make more sense to let the electrician do it when he wires the socket in for you.
Second, on the control surface where the power and pump buttons are there is a rather unique socket there, I have included a close up picture of it. There is a similar socket on the back of the machine with a plug of some sort inserted. I don’t know whether you are supposed to remove the plug from the back and insert it in the front for operation or whether both sockets need the same plug or a different plug or maybe neither. If you have to have one of them in both I only have the one pictured in the back. Also relative to sockets, there is an AC socket on the back for the required vacuum pump (which is NOT included), but it would accept some sort of euro plug that I didn’t get with the thing (and so of course it is also NOT included). Hey, the thing is made in Liechtenstein, what can I tell you?
Third, the thing has a small nick in the rim of the glass cylinder that surrounds the sputtering chamber, but I don’t think it would cause a problem with the vacuum seal. I have a close up picture of that for your inspection. Other than that it looks OK to me. I took the front panel cover off to see what was inside, I thought it was pretty clever that they basically used a small scissors jack to raise and lower the sputter platform. Beyond that I don’t know what else to tell you other than what you see is what you will get, so please inspect the pictures carefully.

Sold as is, as described, as pictured. Potential buyers are asked to please make sure you have read the listing carefully, and understand what you are buying. Ebay’s condition codes for used items, which I am now required to select from, might imply a degree of functionality that my limited time, knowledge, and facilities do not allow me to ascertain. If the functional condition of the item is known it will be stated as such in the listing. Unless a warranty is specifically offered returns are not accepted regardless of any implied functionality.
You are also encouraged to visit my “ME” page, where my terms, conditions, and philosophy of doing business are outlined. I don’t think anything there is outside the bounds of normal e-commerce, but they are binding on the transaction.
Payment is expected within 7 days of the close of the sale and I need to hear from you within 3 days to confirm the transaction. Because of the weight and bulk of the item I have chosen to let ebay’s shipping calculator figure out the cost based on your zip code. The calculator assumes UPS shipping, but I do not use UPS, the shipment will go fedex ground instead.
