Sequels rarely measure up to their prequel! However, there are rare exceptions: I believe "Basic Instinct 2" is better than its 1992 prequel, "Basic Instinct." Though Detective Nick "Shooter" (Michael Douglas) is no longer matched with the stunning Sharon Stone, she aptly picks up her role as Catherine Tramell, the murder mystery writer, with Dr. Michael Glass (David Morrissey). Unlike Jodie Foster being replaced after "Silence of the Lambs," in "Hannibal," Morrissey's character is not trying to be at all like Douglas's. This is one reason why the sequel succeeds for me. Director Michael Caton-Jones's psychological thriller cuts to the chase with the opening scene being a reckless, erotically charged one with Tramell (Stone) racing a sports car through London while having an orgasm with a famous British athlete. They crash & he drowns. Once again, she's viewed as responsible for his death. Tramell's character is as lusty after shock value as she was in "Basic Instinct," except this time, Stone has mastered her character to a fine art. She sexually & intellectually teases & taunts Dr. Michael Glass (Morrissey) while he's supposed to be evaluating her fitness to be released from custody while awaiting the murder trial. The ways she seduces him are much more refined & subtle than in "Basic Instinct." Glass is methodically trapped in Tramell's web after he has private therapy sessions with her. Tramell is quite adept at turning the tables on Glass: questioning his personal relationships, preying upon his weaknesses. Slowly but surely the people in his life suffer peculiar circumstances. Though he can't link or prove it, the duped psychotherapist suspects Tramell. The plot becomes much more twisted as supporting characters are introduced with juicy roles in Glass's sorted past. These twists are complex enough to keep the suspense tight & tense enough to make this sequel surpasses its original: Stone's performance is better the second time as the more subtly cunning Tramell.Read full review
