Item specifics

Seller Notes: This book is in remarkably good condition for its age. The binding has pulled away from the book but the pages are tight. Quite clean. The spine and cover corners appear to be leather.
Year Printed: 1874
The complete title of this book is: "BOOK OF RECORDED MARKS AND BRANDS, Embracing All the Marks and Brands Recorded From the First Organization of the [Utah] Territory to December 9th 1874, Near Five Thousand in Number, Except Those Voluntarily Relinquished and a Few For Which the Recording was Not Paid. Compiled With Great Care, and Published by Authority of the Legislative Assembly.  Published at the Deseret News Steam-Printing and Publishing Establishment, Salt Lake City."

Under the "Remarks" section it says:
"In the month of March, 1874, the following notice was sent to presiding officers in every settlement of the Territory: "Every person having a Mark or Brand on the General Record is equally interested in having the new publication as correct as possible, and should be willing to aid in all necessary corrections.  I therefore request as follows:

"All who have changed their place of residence since their brands were recorded should notify me at once, by mail, of their present or prospective residence.  When they do so they must describe their mark or brand, and the year when recorded, to facilitate search in order to make the correction.

"The widows, or sons, of persons who have died since their marks or brands were recorded, who continue to use the same mark or brand, should promptly notify me in whose name they desire them printed, stating the mark or brand, and year when recorded.

"Persons who have abandoned any recorded mark or brand, or knowing of any that are abandoned, should notify me of the fact.  It is desirable to avoid incumbering the new book with brands not in use, nor intended to be used.

"No charge will be made for correcting residence, or changing the names of deceased persons to that of their widows or sons."

To this notice comparatively little attention was paid.  There was no alternative but to print the marks and brands as originally recorded.  This is to be regretted, as many persons have changed their residences since their brands were recorded, and the book does not show the present residences in very many instances."

Wm. Clayton, Recorder
Salt Lake City, December, 1874

The book measures 7 3/4" x 10 3/4" and has 254 pages.  If you are into Utah history, this book is awesome!

Questions and answers about this item

Q: Are there any drawings of the brands on cattle or horses that show the placement of the brands. Thank you.
A: Rats...I think I just deleted my message. There are no pictures, but the second column after the picture of the brand says "Place of Brand" which says things like "left shoulder", or "right thigh". ... Continue reading
