BASIL WOLVERTON: BARFLIZE. A SERIES OF GENUINE, LIMITED EDITION SIGNED AND NUMBERED FINE ART ETCHING PRINTS. LICENSED AND AUTHORIZED BY MONTE WOLVERTON (BASIL'S SON) AND ETCHED BY RICHARD PARKS.
Basil Wolverton might be best remembered for his work in the 1950s on the EC comic book (since turned magazine) MAD, written and published by Harvey Kurtzman and William M Gaines. Wolverton's work is unique and immediately recognizable. His other works include a long series of religious and biblical history illustrations in the 1960s, Sapcehawk and Powerhouse Pepper in the 1930s and 1940s, and one of of the most ugly portraits ever conceived -- Lena the Hyena. For a quick little biography of Wolverton see http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/wolvertn.htm
In 1974, Basil and Monte Wolverton issued a small comic entitled "Common Types of Barflyze" featuring 33 different original Basil Wolverton drawings specially designed for this series. In 2007, Monte and I got together to produce the first Basil Wolverton etchings -- based on this original series (including 3 additional Barflyze not originally published in 1974). Each of the 36 different Barflyze were remastered as intaglio etching plates and are being produced in limited, signed and numbered editions of only 100 prints each -- once these 100 prints are sold, there will be NO further prints made of the edition, guaranteed. Each etching is hand inked and pressed, signed and numbered by the etcher (Richard Parks) and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Each plate has been personally approved and authorized by Monte Wolverton. Each etching is produced on acid free archival French Arches etching paper using hand mixed ink, each has a strong plate impression all around and includes Basil Wolverton's trademark signature in the plate. This series is currently in production and as they are completed they will be offered on eBay. Because of the limited nature of the production, those interested in ensuring a complete set are encouraged to email me for details and newsletter email updates.
This eBay listing is for the "BARFLIZE 24 ", IN THE SERIES OF 36! It comes signed and numbered with a certificate of authenticity. The art area measures 5x7" and has ample margins all around for matting and framing. It is produced on white, heavy ARCHES French acid free archival etching paper. Signed in the plate Basil Wolverton, signed in pencil in the lower right by the etcher, Richard Parks. Titled lower left and individually numbered lower center. Important, a scanned image of an etching does not do justice to the detail of the etching itself. Consequently, the etching itself is MUCH nicer in person. Satisfaction guaranteed.
WHAT IS AN ETCHING PRINT and HOW WAS THIS FINE ART PRINT PRODUCED? An etching is a print produced from an intaglio plate, hand inked and wiped using premium pigment inks and impressed using an "o" roller hand cranked intaglio press. The beauty of an etching is, unlike conventional art prints, the linework itself is raised and gives the artwork a 3D like quality. During the 1600s, Rembrandt Van Rijn popularized the etching print, and etchings were produced through the 1700s, being largely replaced by steel plate engravings during most of the 1800s. Etchings saw a slight revival in the late 1800s and early 1900s and due to the expense and labor involved in producing them were eventually replaced by the modern day, common 'offset' produced art print of today. Etchings plates are made from a variety of materials including copper, zinc, and polymers. The etched plate is produced by creating or transfering an artwork onto the plate and then etching the plate (a process of removing lines in the plate of the artwork so there remains channels and grooves in the plate). The etched plate is then fully inked, pressing and squeezing the ink into the linework of the plate and then wiping away all ink not in the grooves and linework and then placed on the bed of the press. Cotton based paper is soaked, blotted, and laid across the surface of the inked plate. Three different grades of heavy felt are then placed on top of the paper and inked plate and the entire assemblage is hand cranked through the "o" roller intaglio press. The felts are removed and the now-inked print is placed on special acid free papers for drying and curing. All aspects of an etching print are done by hand and is a time-demanding process but the end result is a print type unlike any modern day art print. Basil's particular style of artwork lends itself perfectly to the etched plate medium -- every line, dot and bizarre detail of Basil's own hand shine through in these Wolverton Etchings.
Here is an extreme closeup detail of one of the barflize etchings, showing the dots and lines. Unlike modern day prints that are produced using offset methods (where tiny little screen patterns make up the artwork), the Wolverton etchings are unique in that the final etching artwork is PURE, there are no patterns and photolineworks. These etchings are precisely like the etching prints of the 1600s and the linework is faithful to Basil's own hand.
This closeup is enlarged on the screen 800+% actual size. The area you are seeing here is actually around 1/4" wide on the actual etching.
