16mm SUPER 16 Projector
Super 16 is a film format that takes advantage of the unused sound track area in 16mm film to increase image quality by 20% to 65% depending on the desired aspect ratio.
The Super-16 format was developed by Swedish cinematographer Rune Ericson, in 1965. Ericson was searching for a way to shoot feature films for 35mm exhibition with a lightweight 16mm camera.
The first feature film shot in the Super 16 format 1:66-1 , Lyckliga Skitar, was released in Sweden in September 1970.
Description of Super 16 Super 16 is a variation of the original 16mm format that increases the exposed negative (image) area by extending it over the area of the film that was reserved for the soundtrack.

A little History.
These projectors were conceived as a result of Military Specification (JAN Spec 143) that were commissioned by the USA "WAR DEPARTMENT" in late 1943. It was not until the conclusion of WWII that the first machines came off the assembly line.
The first Company to be awarded the contract was De Vry, followed by Federal Mfg. Company, Aimes, Bell & Howell, Lumen Electric Co., Cine Products Supply Co., Viewlex Inc. and International Cinema Equipment Co.
ICECO-MTE acquired all the parts and manufacturing tooling from B&H in 1984, Cine Products and Viewlex in 1985. ICECO made the machine thru the early 2001. There were over 100,000 of these machines made over a period of about 50 years. Many are still in service today that were made in 1947.
Bell & Howell, Viewlex and ICECO offered the civilian version of this machine. It generally carried the Model Number 614. The Military versions carried Military Federal stock numbers and model numbers.
The Government acquisition cost for a complete AS-2 system was nearly $1,250.00 each
(over 40 years ago).
