Hardback, publisher’s cream quarter-cloth with green lettering to spine, batik paper-covered boards with aqua-coloured zig-zag pattern, top edges coloured, other edges unut, 61 line drawings, cancel title page, xi, 144 pages. Approximate size 7.6 x 5.1 inches (19.2 x 13 cm). Printed in Great Britain by Richard Clay & Sons Ltd, Bungay, Suffolk.

First American edition, 1927 (undated).
Date according to UK edition, published by John Lane
(as per British Library catalogue).

Averil Burleigh (1883-1949) is one of the least-known figures of the Golden Age of book illustration, the 24 colour plates in her Poems of John Keats (1911) representing her finest works as an illustrator. Her only other published books appear to be several novelisations of Shakespeare, together with this somewhat later collection of fairy and fantasy poems.

Thistledown
features 61 detailed, delicate drawings, one for every poem in the book. The drawings vary in size, but, whether large or small, are always elegantly presented by themselves on the page, facing the poem they illustrate. They depict all manner of fairy folk – mostly fairies, mermaids, sprites, nymphs and elves, but also fauns, a satyr, a witch and a gnome
in a style occasionally a little reminiscent of Horace Knowles in his Peeps into Fairyland (1924).

The poems themselves are somewhat whimsical, and very much of the period – the whole production typical of the Fairy School of writing and illustration.

A particularly uncommon title; I can locate only one other copy currently for sale online (in poor condition).

From Liss Fine Arts:
“Averil Burleigh: Painter and jewellery designer; lived in Hove, Sussex and studied at Brighton School of Art. Her husband was the painter C.H.H. Burleigh, her daughter the artist Veronica Burleigh. She exhibited widely – at the RA, RSA, NEAC, RI, SWA, Sussex Women's Art Club and RCamA – and was elected an associate of the RWS shortly before she died. She was also a Member of the Society of Mural Decorators and Painters in Tempera. Her most characteristic works are brightly painted in tempera, with a strong sense of design. Her subject matter was usually based on classical or medieval subjects, and pretty maidens (often modelled on her daughter Veronica) set in Renaissance landscapes. Her watercolours (and pure landscapes in oil) were handled more loosely but still underpinned by a strong linearity. Brighton Art Gallery held a memorial show in the year of her death.”

Shipping from UK:
All goods are securely packed, with multiple purchases combined where possible. Items are generally mailed within one or two days of receipt of payment. Any customs charges are the responsibility of the buyer.

Shipping costs:
Shipping costs are as per eBays shipping menu, near the head of this listing (click on Postage tab).
For all non-UK countries, secure registered delivery is an extra £5.30, where desired. This is via Royal Mail’s International Signed For service. Airsure at a little more is also available for some countries, with the benefit of full tracking. Signed For is always recommended for high-value items, but usually optional (I do sometimes make exceptions, particularly for countries such as Italy or Poland, where the postal service is known to be unreliable).
Note that my prices include a small sum towards the cost of packaging materials.

Payment:
I will send an invoice at the end of the auction.
UK buyers: payments are accepted by cheque, postal order, bank transfer or PayPal.
All other buyers, including US: payments are accepted via PayPal. I can also accept cheques in GB pounds sterling drawn on a UK bank account, or bank transfers in certain cases.
I will do my best to accommodate other payment methods, but please email me first to make sure.
