The Basics/Story Armor Attack is a videogame based on a single screen of play, just like Pac-Man. You can play alone or with a friend. You are in a tank in a city that is war-torn, with trees around you. Your goal is to destroy the tanks that come at you, as well as a helicopter that comes by sometimes. There is no ending. You just try to get the highest score possible. Graphics/Effects The graphics and animations in this game are simple, but very nice. You have two types of main character graphics - the tank, and the helicopter. You can control a tank. The computer controls the enemy tanks, and the enemy helicopter. The stage or "field" is made of squares and rectangles. On the Vectrex, you would use something called an "overlay" that goes on top of the monitor which creates the illusion that those blocks on the screen are trees and that you are fighting in a forest or jungle area. The detail on the tank's graphics is very nice. You can make out the sides where the wheels are located and the cannon is distinct. The helicopter is fairly detailed as well, relative to its time. The animation of these vehicles is where this game shines. The helicopter moves very smoothly on the screen as it hovers around trying to shoot at you. Best of all, it feels nice to destroy the helicopter and see it come crashing down to the ground in the direction it was traveling. The game physics in this regard are fairly good for their time. The tanks also move very smoothly. When you shoot against a wall, you will see your bullet "spark" off it. This was a nice touch that was used. Lastly, when you are shot by the enemy, you blow up in a way where your tank expands and then collapses into itself. Music/Sound This game does not have music. It does have a few sound effects. For example, when the helicopter comes onto the stage, you can hear it. When you shoot the helicopter, you will "feel" like you literally shot it because of the hard sound effect it makes. When you get shot, you do not hear anything. Sometimes, you will also hear the tanks. Game Play/Fun Factor This is where this game shines. It is VERY fun to play as you go around destroying the tanks and the helicopter. Granted there is no ending but you can play for a high score to make it fun. The best thing is when you play with a friend. You can play competitively, helping each other out destroying the enemies, or you can battle for the highest score before the game comes to an end (before you both die and the game is over). Closing Comments This game is an arcade conversion (originally from 1980, licensed to SEGA in Japan, then made for the Vectrex by GCE in 1982) and is a classic for its time. This game would have been much better if it had an end boss, or some kind of storyline with an ending or goal besides achieving a high score. It makes for wonderful "arcade style" fun, meaning that it is great to play for a few minutes here and there. This is also one of the few and rare games that allowed for simultaneous cooperative gameplay on the Vectrex. If you have a Vectrex or remember playing this in the arcade, or just want a simple arcade experience, check this one out. Use the overlay if you can find one (you can use the original, or just find it online and then print it onto a clear hard plastic sheet - the kind they use on projectors in schools) to be fully immersed in the game.
