Aqua Vita Farms

Expiration Date: 2 Weeks From Harvest Model:

Aquaponic Tomato

Country of Manufacture: United States
You are bidding on the first ever, one of a kind, Aqua Vita Farms Aquaponic Tomato. Now, not only will the winning bidder receive the very first tomatoes, once they ripen, but also all the other tomatoes on the six plants that are currently growing! We will even throw in 1/2 pound of our Aqua Vita Farms Aquaponic Sweet Basil with the first shipment! EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY! The winning bidder will have piece of mind in knowing that they have made a significant contribution to the security of our worlds food supply by supporting Aquaponics and Controlled Environment Agriculture!

The Story:

Aqua Vita Farms is New York States premier Controlled Environment Agriculture facility using the Aquaponic Farming Method. Aquaponics is the process of Aquaculture (fish farming) and Hydroponics (growing plants without soil), it is often described as: "We feed the fish, the fish feed the plants and the plants clean the water. It is an all-natural process that grows pesticide, herbicide, chemical and antibiotic free seafood and produce. While utilizing 90% less water and growing 2X the crop per square foot. The combination of Aquaponics and Controlled Environment Agriculture allows us to grow year round regardless of external conditions.

Aqua Vita Farms grows Tilapia fish in tanks (we have over 7,000 fish) and utilizes the nutrient rich water to grow over 56,000 lettuce, basil, and greens. As part of our all-natural process we also utilize vermiculture and composting to add nutrients in the systems. Sometimes a "rogue" plant will find its way in through the compost, this is where our tomatoes came from. Now usually we will remove these "rogues" as they will more than likely not thrive due to the fact that we run a strictly vegetative system, meaning we don't flower or fruit any of our plants. However, these little tomatoes looked so healthy when they came up that we just couldn't pull them. So we said "let's see what these girls will do?" And even though they are not getting the precise conditions to make them thrive; they are! A testament to the wonderful world of Aquaponic Farming!

We started Aqua Vita Farms because
if those of us who can, do not act NOW, our planet is facing a food crisis by the year 2050. Exponential population growth, urbanization, decreasing availability of land, water shortage, increasing demand of developing nations and decreasing yield due to artificial fertilization is placing a burden on our already stressed global food supply system. Aquaponics and Controlled Environment Agriculture offer solutions to these problems. But if we wait, it's gonna be to late!

Ever since I started Aqua Vita Farms people keep telling me that they want a "ripe, jucy, flavorful, tomato, in February". However, the issue has always been one of cost as the market is flooded with cheap (albeit flavorless) tomatoes. So as I looked at the little beauties this morning I thought "
what would someone pay if they new how critical this little fruit was?"

As noted above, the winner of this auction gets: the tomato in the picture (once it ripens), all of the other tomatoes harvested off the 6 plants currently growing, 1/2 pound of our Aquaponic Sweet Basil, and the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping to ensure our children and grand-children's future. Now we have no way of knowing exactly how many tomatoes there will be total but that is half the fun, right? The tomatoes and basil will be shipped next-day to ensure freshness (remember they are being picked ripe). If you are local we will refund the shipping!

What would you pay to change the world?
