This is a diary/journal by Martha VanMeter Proctor in Davidson County, Nashville Tennessee. A full year ~ 1928. Mrs. Proctor is the 53-year-old wife of Robert "Robin" Lee Proctor and the mother of five children whom she ADORES:

Van Meter Proctor Blackie - Married to W.M. "Bill" Blackie and has a one year old also named "baby Van Meter" who cries alot and doesn't sleep the entire year it seems.

Robert "Bob" Lee Proctor - 22 years old. Is gone most of the year to Central America as a Civil Engineer for the Standard Fruit Steam Ship Company.

Frank S. Proctor - 18 years old. Attends Hume Fogg for High School and is involved in Scouts, Capt of Track Team, in the orchestra, LOVES to date, attends the Christian Endeavor, and by the end is attending Vanderbuilt University "Vandy" as a Phi Theta Pi.

Mary Bryan Proctor, 12, and Betsy, 10, both attend Robertson Academy and are very joyful little girls.

There are also three black servants who work for them she talks about a lot: Chap, Florence "Della" and Charlie Allen.

Each page is full of life in Davidson County in 1928 for a housewife. They have built a new home called Wildwood on Hill Road. It is a large area with their own small farm - garden, couple horses, chickens, etc. They are apparently rather affluent because they have lots of nice things, furnishings, food, her own car, attend events at the Country Club and the Centennial Club, have black 'servants' - Della and Charlie and Chap, and they like to shop. Robin, the husband takes a job as the Industrial Secretary for the Chamber of Commerce. Martha seems like a lovely woman who shows her affection for her children and husband. In the last few months of her journal the Dr tells her she has bad arthritis and must be bed-ridden for several months in order to get better. In her writings, she says her daughter Van Meter brings her a bed jacket. I believe this to be the one, it was the only one sold at the same estate. The bed jacket is in great condition.

The diary itself is in wonderful condition. No moisture damage, page tears, etc. Binding still secure. It was a "Year Book" given as an advertising piece from the United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company. A great moment in time immediately before the stock market crash.

JUST TO NAME A FEW- Lots of location names: Hermitage Hotel, Polly Pitts Beauty Shop, Tulane Hotel, Capitol Theatre, Monterey Camp, First Presbyterian Church, Brentwood, "Franklin Road torn up for High Way", Madison Sanitorium, Fortune Teller in Franklin, Kleimans Restaurant, Y. W Tea Room, Vanderbuilt Hospital, Nolensville Road, Princess Store, Brentwood Fair.  FULL of names of friends and families and last names known in the area (some): Pickups, Isabella Goodlove, Ellen Martin, Dr Vance, Dixons, Ingram, DeMitt, Dr H Wood, Reese, Granberry Jackson, McAllisters, Dr Wood, Buchanon, Dr Tucker, Dr Rheos, Tally, etc.

Good detail to these people's lives. Feel good diary.
