I am pleased to offer this elegant, old dress cane with a Sterling handle in the form of a Stag Horn. The back of the handle is engraved RUTGERS ’91 and the collar reads F.S. Smith. I did a bit of research and found FREDERICK SEYMOUR SMITH graduated Rutgers in 1891 with a Bachelors of Science. Wouldn’t it be something if his Great Grandchildren could find this?! The underside of the handle is marked Sterling.
The narrow, tapered shaft ends in the original metal ferrule that is approx. 1-1/8” long and is worn at an angle. The shaft itself is a dense hardwood with nice graining. I am not sure of the species, it may be called Snakewood. It has a smooth finish. There are five distinct “dings” towards the top of the shaft that actually look like “notches” carved into the wood.
This exceptional walking stick measures approx. 33 ½” and the handle is about 3 ¾”. A real beauty and sure to be a welcome addition to any collection! It comes to you in Excellent original condition.
