Slate and shell pendants, like the one you are bidding on were worn by the native peoples, in the Hudson Valley, in the Middle Connecticut River Valley, and also by the coastal New England tribes. The circular, disk-shaped pieces with engravings of animals and crosses were called ‘runtees’, and this is one of two rare examples we have on auction this week. We have also posted in the pictures several sketches of similar examples.

 

The one listed here was part of an estate collection, and is consigned to us for auction. Its diameter is 2.5 inches and is said to date from the Archaic period in North America; this one appears to be made of slate, with some wear evident to the original holes used to place them on a necklace.
