Antique NAPOLEON CARICATURE Lithograph POLITICAL Satire German
A rare Prussian political caricature
depicting Napoleon's soul being fought over by the Devil and
his grandmother. Dates from the Napoleonic Wars, 1803 to 1815.
We are overjoyed to present this rare
collector's item dating from the Napoleonic Wars. This famous
lithograph was printed in German, unlike most surviving prints
which are printed primarily in English. The caricature depicts
the Devil and his grandmother fighting over Napoleon's soul,
inferring that the Emperor of France was truly evil.
The Napoleonic Wars were a series
of conflicts declared against Napoleon's French Empire by opposing
coalitions that ran from 1803 to 1815. This war revolutionized
European armies and played out on an unprecedented scale, mainly
due to the introduction of mass conscription and the Industrial
Revolution. French power rose quickly as Napoleon's armies conquered
much of Europe. This caricature, obviously a German reaction
to Napoleon's rise to power, depicts him as so evil the devils
are actually fighting over posession of his soul. The caption,
in German, translates to the devil's arguing "He's mine!
No, he's mine!" The title over the picture roughly translates
as "The Devil and his grandmother.".
The lithograph is 4 inches wide by
6 1/2 inches high. This litho is almost 200 years old, but the
details are still very sharp. Though Napoleon's image is in
a small frame on the picture, his coat buttons can be made out
clearly, as can the seam where his trademark hand goes into
his front shirt.
Dating from the end of the Napoleonic
Wars, this lithograph is almost 200 years old. Foxing is prevalent
on the litho's right side and across the top. There are small,
triangular tear in the lower left edge and the corners are dog
eared. This is very light considering the age of the piece.
The caption and title, in German, is clear and can be read easily.
If framed, this would be an impressive piece.
This is a rare piece, as few caricatures actually
done in German survive to the present day. Even then, they are
often found in Museums across Europe. The lithograph would look
fantastic framed, and would be a valuable addition to any collector
of Napoleonica.
