Title: Antique Map Palmer MA Massachusetts
County: Hampden
Print Year: 1870
Approx. Map Size: 13"x16"
Condition: Fine Condition
Additional Information: This is a map of the town of Palmer from an 1870 atlas of Hampden County by FW Beers. It shows the areas of Blanchardville, Tennyville, Palmer, Old Centre, Thorndike, Three Rivers, Bonds Village, and Duckville. Two railroad lines feature prominently in the map: The Boston and Albany line and the London Northern. The railroad runs almost parallel to the Quaboag River, crossing and recrossing it several times. One can only imagine that in 1870 that was a pretty ride alongside the river. Also running through town are the Chicopee and Swift Rivers with the railroads following them for a ways as well. The Beers family made some of the best maps of the period. They clearly enjoyed their work and it is not unusual for them to have interesting historical notations on their maps. This one does not disappoint. Thee is a caption that reads: "From this elm Washington addressed the people" and there is a tree drawn there to mark it. One is so curious to wonder what he had to say and when!
